As a die-hard dress/skirt wearer, I loved the very long coats of last winter, so I stocked up. Banana Republic had some beautiful, classic-fit, all-wool, breathable rayon-lined, ones, so I got them in almost every color. The House of Bruar, a Scottish company that makes beautiful clothes, also has lovely cashmere/wool blend ones in several colors, so I bought a chestnut brown and a khaki-green, two colors I really needed for my wardrobe (they also make very warm, insulated, long raincoats and many other country essentials. This is the place to shop for the trending British Countryside Look worn by the Princess of Wales and other classy ladies). These coats were a big investment, but after four decades of not being able to afford a new coat, I finally could last winter, so I indulged. Like all my coats, they will stay in my wardrobe and be worn forever. I still love and wear my 40-year old Dior long wool coat, the only coat I ever had until last year. It still looks brand-new! The cost-per-wear of even expensive coats quickly goes down with daily wear, as I did with my Dior during my daily commute of my whole career. Without great wool coats, one can neither stay warm, nor look well-dressed, they are well worth the high initial prices. They are heirloom quality, if bought in a classic style and high-quality, natural-fiber fabrics, and can be passed down to daughters or nieces, or even resold at high prices. High-quality, natural-fiber clothing is getting hard to find these days.

I absolutely love your comments-they always lead to such deep conversations and thoughtful explanations! 🥰❤️❤️❤️ Wow, it sounds like you’ve curated a beautiful and timeless collection of coats! I absolutely agree that investing in high-quality, natural-fiber pieces is so worth it in the long run, especially when they last for decades. Your Dior coat sounds incredible, and it’s amazing how well it has held up even with daily wear! I love that you’re embracing the British Countryside look-it’s such a classy, timeless style. I also find that investing in staple pieces like these really pays off when you think about the cost-per-wear. And yes, it’s definitely getting harder to find great-quality natural fibers these days! Thank you for sharing your insights-such a great reminder of the value in timeless fashion. 💖😊

On the other hand, sometimes you get lucky at the thrift. I've found a Lauren men's camel/tan wool top coat for $15, as well as a couple of high end lined trench coats for similar prices! Always check the men's department, especially if you're on the tall side. 😊 👍

Long coats are very important in my wardrobe because I wear dresses or skirt outfits nearly everyday, for their superior comfort, year-round (knee-high and thigh-high leather boots and warm tights are important, too). Most of my coats are long, heavy wool (or cashmere, or blend) winter ones. I do have a couple of trench coats, though, that I can wear in milder weather, and a black silk one. Most or all (can’t remember now) of my trench coats have removable, insulated liners (from London Fog), that I can add on wet, but cold, days, or where alone on wet, warmer days, they’re very versatile. I have a forty-year old bottle-green one with black corduroy collar that I’m looking forward to wearing soon. We only get about a month of autumn weather where I live, not until November is the weather reliably cool, then we go right into our coldest month, December. So, October is a tricky month for dressing here, with temps varying from very hot, high-summer temps of 100F+ to the 60s and low 70sF on other days (all daily highs). It seems like I have to have accessible clothes from every season, but I have very limited space in my bedroom. By this time of year, I’m always very tired of the brutal heat waves we get, and just want to be able to count on consistently cooler weather. On the other hand, spring here is very long, from February until early June. (San Francisco Bay Area, Mediterranean climate).

Wow, it sounds like you’ve really mastered the art of layering and dressing for all types of weather! I love that you have such versatile pieces, especially those long coats and removable liners. October definitely sounds like a tricky month in your area, but it seems like you’ve got a great system down with those boots and tights too. That vintage bottle-green coat sounds stunning, and I can imagine how excited you are to wear it! Personally, I’m a big fan of layering as well, and like you, I have limited space in my wardrobe. It really forces me to get creative with my outfits. I also try to keep things light and make sure my throat area and hips are always covered for that extra comfort. Do you have any go-to styling tips for those unpredictable fall days? 🥰❤️
