I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of a city in the 1930s at night,
probably chiacgo or los angeles, the street sign says Halstead. Lakeview, north of Chicago, it could also be Hollywood/McCadden looking southeast , we can see what is happening in the street, the people walking, the stores open and especially the luxury car
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔sound design added only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)
Please, be aware that colorization colors are not real and fake, colorization was made only for the ambiance and do not represent real historical data.

@NASS Fascinating how much more crisp this is, than pretty much every night scene in every film and tv series of the past decade. I can make out details even across the street, the depth of field is extremely good, even subtleties of color and tone probably 70' away are evident. Bravo! It's a tribute to your work and to the original 'primitive' film and cameras of that era. Fwiw I've been increasingly drawn to black and white film noir of the 1940s and 1950s. The cinematography is much, much better on average than what we get today, perhaps b/c of the long training and apprenticeship required to master photography 75 years ago?

This looks like some movie outtakes, probably using both extras and real traffic/pedestrians. Dating this with any specificity is not easy. But based on cars and the styles of clothing, I'd say late 20s to very early 30s. Great job with the restoration as usual.

The first part... not so much, seems like impromptu filming to me. The second part, 100% it. The exaggerated motions of those three + the aviator(?) kinda give it away, plus nobody double takes at the camera. You can also see the two fellows who weren't part of it that stop in the window reflection (probably after someone waves them away). Maybe the first part is some B roll? But ... even those are always filmed with informed "passengers". Maybe an inexperienced, low budget affair.

All those people were coming from somewhere and headed somewhere. Obviously everyone is all the time, but here it feels strange to think about, like we glimpse only this moment of their lives in between the the entirety of their lives before and after this footage. Sorry I can't explain the feeling very well. Great work on the video anyway. Thank you.

My mother said something like that to me once when we were driving down the street. She said, "do you ever wonder about other people like that guy over there? Where he lives, if he has a family, if he's happy or depressed? If life turned out the way he wanted it to or he's disappointed about something that happened 30 years ago?" And I said, "No. Never." 😂 and she said "well I do, all the time" ... which I'm pretty sure is why she's so nosey... like, mind your own business, lady! Jk my mom is the best.

You know, that kind of looked staged. At 2:20 you can see the “perp” through the store windows and he is just standing there looking straight ahead. Then he takes off running, hesitates to look back, as if a director told him to, and keeps running. The cops looked like they came from the street, not from around the corner. Maybe this is why it feels like it’s straight out of a movie? And what’s with the motorcycle cop just strolling around the corner looking handsome? I don’t know. I could be wrong about all of that.

Might be, though the first scene, of the other corner, feels authentic. I suppose the first scene could be a camera setup on a lot of one of the studios of the day, as it would be almost unprecedented to do a night scene like this in an actual city in the U.S. (Italian neorealists were already doing night location shooting in Europe in the 1940s).

If you look through the window starting at the moment the scene changes around 2:18, you can see the guy just standing there. 3 seconds later, he suddenly out of nowhere starts to run around the corner. I think it was staged...for whatever reason lol. Look directly to the left of the dresses on display, or right above the hat. The man is just standing still there, then starts to run.

Definitely LA. McCadden PL (you can just barely make out the street sign) and Hollywood Blvd. Archive shows an "Oriental Cafe" @ 6728 Hollywood Blvd (grand opening 28Aug1930). That address then shows a Club New Yorker in 1935. So film may be somewhere between Aug1930 and 1935. This is smack dab in the center of Hollywood. Maybe this was some sort of pickup reel for filler. That's why the clothing is impeccably worn on the passersby. The Pacific vertical neon was from a Union Pacific office at 6732 Hollywood Blvd.

I thought this was just random footage until the police chase. That had to have been staged. Fascinating nonetheless.

The guy at the end set it up well. knowing the cities back then the cops handled business. The motorcycle cop seem kind of random lol

I was waiting to see Al Capone appear however at the end the cops chasing that guy almost seems like maybe the camera guy had that bit staged.

At the height of the gang wars... Prohibition was still in effect for another three years and somewhere in the city, Al Capone was living up the nightlife.

By that time Alcapone was locked up in Alcatraz. I had hoped to see him show up in his car.

First of all this is Los Angeles in the footage Secondly the Chicago Loop is quite safe, and one of the most architecturally endowed parts of America.
