Gene and Jude’s isn’t a Chicago Dog, it’s a depression dog. No celery salt, pickle Spear or tomato. Chicago Dog is Mustard , relish, sport peppers, tomato, pickle spear, celery salt, onions. Been going to G&J’s for 40+ yrs.
@MaxandSidney4 ай бұрын
Unbelievably good!!
@lcheaton11304 ай бұрын
It is a dog in Chicago, and something you dont see anywhere else. You can get a "Chicago Dog" aka dragged through the garden in Boca Raton, Florida. So this dog is even more representing Chicago.
@aomalle4 ай бұрын
@@lcheaton1130 has nothing to do with "representing Chicago". Chicago Dog and Depression Dog are two different animals. Gene & Jude's serves Depression dogs. Calling it a Chicago dog is wrong. Chicago dogs have mustard, onion, relish (most neon green), tomato, celery salt, dill pickle spear, sport peppers, and a poppy seed bun. And fries come as a side (though one could argue Superdawg's fries are on the dog, though that's just to limit the size of the box it comes in).
@aomalle4 ай бұрын
@@lcheaton1130 calling a depression dog, a Chicago dog, would be akin to calling a Gray's papaya, a New York Coney. They are different animals altogether.

As noted by someone above, Ricobene's for the breaded steak sandwich, and try the chicken vesuvio sandwich also. Jim's Original for a Maxwell Street Polish and a Pork Chop sandwich. The Golden Steer for French onion soup and Prime Rib. Laschet's Inn for schnitzel or sauerbraten (an acquired taste) or the Saturday night special deep fried pork shank.
@aomalle4 ай бұрын
I agree with you on the schnitzel. (Though the Brau Haus used to have the best schnitzel til it closed). But Berghoff still has the best sauerbraten. (Even though they went through that weird phase in the early 2000's when the daughter took over the restaurant and completely changed the menu. They are back to serving solid German fare. And their flourless chocolate cake can't be beat. though they used to make the airiest, most flavorful white mousse. Sadly, that was discarded during the avant garde phase.)

To Chicago area visitors: the no mustard on a hot dog "rule" is nonsense. Very few places don't also make catsup available.....I'd guess less than 3%. It's an old preference which is continued today mostly for marketing purposes or just to be quirky. I get annoyed every time I hear about it bc it does not reflect reality. It is good to know the few places that don't offer catsup if you are a big catsup fan, altho I think you will survive.
