This is Peter Cetera's song, from "Chicago VII", 1974. I think it's the most underrated Chicago ballad. Sung in this video by Jason Scheff (Tokyo, 1993).

Great bass playing and excellent vocal! Ladies and gentlemen Jason Freakin' Scheff!!! I was sooo disappointed that he left the band. Such an excellent and humble musician. I never really felt like he was trying to replace Cetera...rather the next bass player/tenor vocalist.

Jason does a great job on this one. Expecially since it was originally written and sung by ultimate crooner Peter Cetera, who's hard to beat.

So disappointed when Jason left the band (or was unceremoniously fired?). So many people were critical of Jason bc he "wasn't Cetera". Screw those people! Jason is a tremendous bassist and vocalist. He lifted Chicago when they were on the downfall

From the start, I never liked Peter Cetera's voice. His voice is irritating to the ears, plus he's not good looking. There's nothing attractive in his person. But I like the songs of the Chicago. So, Jason Scheff is so refreshing voicewise and lookswise, after Cetera. No offense meant Cetera fans. I like Jason Scheff much much better!!!

@Teddyusmc13 - Respectfully, "Happy Man" is Chicago, albiet with Pete on vocals - a fantastic song from 1974's Chicago VII. I agree, however, I would much rather see Pete up there ripping the vocals on this classic - but he quit the band. Jason does the song justice, that being said. :)

The only problem with most of Chicago's ballads, is that the absence of Cetera's distinctive vocals tends to create a conspicuous contrast with how most hear the song in their heads. Hats off to Scheff though, he is certainly talented, but in the difficult role of replacing a Chicago legend.

Jason Scheff deserves more credit. He was with Chicago for 31 years, nearly twice as long as that other guy, Peter Cetera. They both had their own styles and still do. Jason was with People Movers and Keane and he brought a new kind of energy and youth to the band in the mid-1980s and served them well through 2016. His voice was/is terrific for a rock singer/bassist and he does keyboards as well. He has been an inspiration of mine, and that sounds like a Chicago song that he did very well as well.
