Terry Kath was criminally underrated as a guitar player by the press, but musicians were in awe of him. Jimi Hendrix told Chicago, "Your guitar player is better than me!" On that same CTA debut album, you MUST play "Poem 58". Funk, blues and rock fused together, led by Terry Kath's mind-boggling guitar playing. Much better than the bubblegum of Cetera in the post-Kath era.

Chicago was great back in 70’s. I started listen in 69/70 at 8 yrs old but the 80’s Chicago was not unfortunate. They were fantastic & attracted millions of new listeners especially w/ 16 & 17. One of the most quintessential bands of the 70s. Very famous for their incorporation of a smoking brass section combined with a light rock front group. This is one of my fav's. People who don't react well to it, do not know what it means. It's about a relationship in 1967 that was too good to be true. He's a little concerned that it might have been too perfect, and might not be the same in 1968. The best horns of any Chicago song, as they last from start to finish. He 's apprehensive about 1968, and has an image of how great it can continue to be. He resigns himself to that "It really doesn't matter anyhow." "It's just that the THOUGHT of us so happy appears in my mind as a beautifully mysterious thing." During these question's "Other faces fade away." It really hit home for me when I knew just what Question's 67& 68 meant.

Wow!! Honesty!! Excellent. So many reactors on KZbin "love" every song. Which is impossible. This is like the third song that you didn't like from ehat I've seen. And it broke my heart every time🤣🤔, because I loved the songs. With this song, I think the lyrics are beautiful, but you have to kind of be a hippie like me to get it. The music may appear "marching band-ish" with so many horns, but I think it expresses the joy that the singer feels in asking these bigger questions, and then changing his mind, saying it doesn't matter why. Read through the lyrics, Angela, and you'll peel away the hippie dream. You had to be alive in 1967 and 1968 to really get it. Keep up the honesty, sweetheart.✌️🙏✌️🙏.

It is the live Tanglewood version that would make you take notice as Terry was on FIRE. It is 14 minutes. but there are versions were they cut it up and cut out some of the best parts. It includes both of the sections "Make me Smile" and "Colour My World" That the company cut out to make songs that were less than the 3 minute maximum of AM Radio which was standard in cars at the time. The studio version is good but a little dull.

Well, it was very early Chicago and a little rough. The horns are great and Terry Kath's guitar running through them is great. The lyrics are pretty rambling. But Pete Cetera rescues the song for me by the way he sings "ooh" twice in each verse. That's the hook, I think.

My suggestion: Listen to the song 5 more times. You've already heard the amazing vocals. The next time focus on the crazy, creative bass riff throughout this song. Next, listen to great guitar by Terry Kath. For the third listen focus on the horns & how the complement the vocals. The Fourth, focus on the mastery of the orchestration both before and after the bridge in the middle. Lastly, focus on everything you've listened to on the previous four listens, and how each of these very individualistic and creative parts also support each other to create a blend that one very seldom finds and is very unique. I think if you took some time to do this, you'd likely come away with a very different opinion than the one expressed in your video. Best regards to you.

This has never been my favorite Chicago song, though I like it, and now I understand why. The musical chops are undeniable and the performance is spot-on. But my favorite part of the song is the instrumental break; that's where things get interesting for me. It's the time signature / beat of the verses that leaves me feeling less involved. So Angela, I hope this won't put you off from more Chicago songs, whether on or off the channel, because they are a great band with killer musicians. I believe you would like "Colour My World" off their second album, the same one "Make Me Smile" came from; in fact, both are part of the same suite, "Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon." Terry Kath sings both. Other songs to try would be "Beginnings," "South California Purples," or "Saturday in the Park," all with Robert Lamm on lead vocals. And, of course, there's "25 or 6 to 4," with Peter Cetera on lead vocals.

All Great suggestions. - "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon." The Tanglewood concert 1970. Terry was on FIRE. I remember back in high school we were confused because on AM radio you would get one version of Make Me Smile. Then on FM radio you get a slightly longer version that had a little more of the fantastic horns. We were going - "Wait! What is up with that!." - Then we get the album and found out what we were missing.

"Filler" is probably the best description for this song, as it does give the impression that it was simply "content" that they had to come up with, but not really up to par with their usual standards. However, having said that, there are a lot of bands out there, both past AND present, who wish that their very best music was a good as a Chicago "filler".

Chicago definitely had filler songs on their albums, but this certainly was not one of them. No label releases fillers as debut singles from a band's debut album. This one has greatness in it, from a musician's perspective. Interesting horn charts, amazing guitar licks, perfectly high tenor vocal, thoughtful lyrics, etc. The only thing that could be considered even a minor shortcoming was they recorded it as a mid-tempo ballad when maybe a slightly "spicier" rhythm could have made a big difference. Who knows?!
