KerryInTheNameOf I have the answer for u sir and it's actually quite simple. The cowl flapper door was operated by vacuum so only under high vacuum levels would it open aka foot to the floor cuz that's the only time it was needed. The thinking was that no one would full throttle a 396 or 454 chevelle in the rain on skinny bias-ply tires so it stays closed and no rain gets in. If you were brave enough to do so you'd have much more to worry about that getting rain in the filter and carb. Lol.

The vacuum drops when you open the throttle. That's why you match your power valve to your idle vacuum level to keep it from dumping fuel at idle...

People can buy nice new cars, but only a few lucky people can hav very nice old cars. This 1 is a nice f*cking car... I feel so confidence in the trafficlight with this car, let the people hear ur engine... Steer corection problem is usually found in old car, it wont bother u after some hours driving this car.

Good God,that was THE CAR in 1970 when I graduated High School. It was and still is my favorite. My Buddy had one ( They had money ) we cut class one day and went down the shore. The NJ turnpike never saw anything like this car when we came roaring down it! What a ride!

Yes they where 402 and they still badged them as 396’s. These engines are far from a 396 truck motor lol. The SS 396 badge needs to go down and to the left a bit and I doubt that a 1970 Chevelle came tuxedo black with white strips and was ordered with green interior. The steering box is worn… and watch that temp. But it’s a very nice car. Good luck

@mageac idk man, i drove my dads svt, new 392 challenger, and his 78 volre roadrunner edition and my sister got a 00' prelude with a jdm swap and i got an 08 mugen si sedan and a 93 gsr. i think the hondas r more fun but the sound of the muscle and the sheer size of the motor and power. but the weight throws me off. my mugen beat the volare 318. only cause of corners, the svt doesnt turn it just drifts maybe only the 392 does, but i like how the imports handle.
@mageac
@mageac 13 жыл бұрын
@Heco94 so you thing fwd rocks because a stripped down track car corners well.... fwd are easier to drive, but having 70% of the cars weight on the same set of tires that do the accelerating, cornering, and 80% of the braking is not a good idea.... they understeer like a mofo, and cant get any decent traction to accelerate... thiers a reason f1 cars,ferraris, lambos... etc etc etc are not fwd...
@Heco94
@Heco94 13 жыл бұрын
@mageac ... actually it will... FWD corners like a camp, ever see a light FWD run around a track or an autocross? For example a K20a equipped EG civic (less than 2.5k lbs) is fast as hell, I've seen them overtake good drivers driving RX7's. Fwd corners like crap when you don't know how to drive it ;), over weight muscle cars and outdated suspensions dont = performance on the track (even w/a better suspension there still so bulky and un-agile)

Okay guys, I have a question to anyone who owns one of these cars. How do they do in the rain? It seems like the cowl induction hood would allow water to get into the engine. I know this might seem like a stupid question, but I can't find anything information about this potential issue online.

That it is...that it is. It was designed to stand up to the gobs of power in GM's larger engines in the late-60s. The stoutness of this unit brought GM to switch its transmission supplier from Borg-Warner to Muncie until the mid-70's, when muscle cars disappeared and horsepower figures wimped out.

@coandcaiv So you're trying to say most American cars aren't muscle cars??? Get the hell outta here!!! That's YOUR definition. We coined the term "muscle cars". You look like a damn fool, boy. A muscle is a crazy car with loads of horsepower and low-end torque.
