CIW Instigators: Dan Savage, "It Gets Better"

Queer kids are at 4x greater risk of suicide than their straight peers. When their families are hostile and disapproving, that kid is at 8x greater risk. And the queer kid who most desperately needs a gay support group is the one with parents who would never give them permission to go. Through the It Gets Better Project, Dan Savage found a way to speak directly to those kids in order to save lives, whether parents like it or not. I'm not part of the LGBT community, but even as a young adult trying tot find myself in the world, whose spent most of their life being bullied, it gives me hope for the people. so to Dan Savage, Thank you, thank you, thank you!

so happy to see that these days gay people especially youth are much more accepted these days. i know there are still people out in this country, and world, that are homophobic im so happy to see that it got better, we as a country and society have gotten better. and i hope we continue to get better until there is no more homophobia in the world.

Dan has great intentions and he is rightly disgusted with those homophobes, but quite frankly it doesn't necessarily get better, if the lives of gay men I know are any measure. Then again, maybe that's just my generation. Maybe I've missed out on a good gay life. I certainly don't have any advice or good examples to offer gay youth. I'm much closer to suicide at 48 as a gay man than I ever was at 17. The struggles of life as a gay man have gotten the better of me and I've lost my chances at a fulfilling gay life. That's something I never felt when I was young.
