I’ve been watching Johnnie Guilbert for around 8 years now and honestly I like his music. I rarely like music made by people who are mainly KZbinrs but I think he’s genuinely talented and has pretty great lyrics as well. I’ve watched his music grow over the years and some of his recent stuff such as Zombie are amazing!!

My problem with Tiktok when it comes to music especially emotionally driven ones such as emo is you need to hear it up to the chorus and the end to get the full effect. When they repeat the chorus in a loop it takes away from the emotional impact of the chorus. You don't get that hit when it isn't a surprise. Yeah it can be the most fun and catchy part, but the words that lead up to it make it have more of an impact. Take "The Black Parade" for example. If you only heard the chorus the song doesn't have much context. Listen to it from the beginning and you get the heavy instruments and buildup which makes it more powerful. I understand that this is how younger audiences are discovering artists outside of the mainstream, but there is still nothing like listening to a song for the first time from the beginning and letting it all sink in.

I wonder if the black parade (the song) came out today what the reaction would be. Thanks for watching!

Johnnie is definitely not an OG he doesn't make emo music he makes mediocre music, the only types of songs ive liked from him was covers when it was just him and his guitar and not with some over the top autotuned crap with a shitty beat that sounds too pop to be considered emo. i would actually say that the only thing that makes him emo is his style of clothing and tattoos. i really dont get the hype im 1000% sure it's only because he's attractive that he's this popular. his 'comedic' videos is only targeted to people under the age of 14 because of the childish and loud mr beast type of editing.

i think there is an inherent logical flaw when it comes to tx2's point about how he "couldnt have become popular as an emo artist without being cringe" when we have emo artists coming out in the modern day that are exploding in popularity without being "cringe"

"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

I think that the main reason why the pop punk scene was upset at MGK and the new TikTok wave making or trying to make pop punk mainstream again, is that pop punk was perfectly fine where it was in the 2010s as part of the indie scene. Bands like Neck Deep, State Champs, Citizen, Fireworks, The Story So Far, The Wonder Years, Stand Atlantic, Real Friends and Knuckle Puck were making some of the best music of the genre.

I love MGKs music. Tickets to my downfall was a staple for my teen years and his downfalls high movie was emo imo. I know he has done a lot of fucked up things but hes trying to be better. I said i was emo when I didn't really know what it was, and i started with mgk and yungblud then i started listening to peirce, my chem, black veil brides all of that. Now i even listen to korn, and slipknot and Deftones just all alt things. I grew up listening to linkin park and Green Day stuff like that from my dad. Yungblud and mgk got me through a lot and yungbluds music especially was a place i could go to for somewhere to belong as an alt gay kid in the south bible belt. He saved my life because idk if i would still be here if I didn't find his music.
