What a fine musician and great person. Him and his wife are Eastman grads and 2 of their sons attend Juilliard and youngest is up at Interlochen. 🎉

Like the story image from Mr. Williamson, it's much easier to get into this excerpt piece.

see how, when he plays high G, he add pinky F/C, I think, to flat that G that tends to be a little sharp. And look the fingering for high D too!
@thelookingcat11 ай бұрын
The high D is a backless fingering, it's to make the note's color match more with thumb C. G does tend to be sharp on Buffets, but on Selmers it usually isnt (he uses a Selmer Signature), he uses the pinky to prevent it from becoming bright and still allow him to voice higher, in preparation for the higher notes as well as to maintain air speed.

Btw this clarinetist won MET, NY Phil, and Chicago. He's on par with Ricardo in terms of being able to just lay down excerpts and sound amazing. I encourage you to listen to him live at Chicago Symphony if you get the chance. His sound from that stage is like a Stradavarius, pure beauty. Incredible what he can do on such an unforgiving stage.

@@thelookingcat well..i just go by what i hear,,,i am old school...wright, marcellus, de santis..etc,,that sound is what i call a great sound..this new type of sound round,,not centered overly dark sounds too british and i dont care for it,,brody, ricardo,,no thanks
@thelookingcat2 күн бұрын
@@joeenglert I'd say Steve's sound is pretty old-school. Not exactly Wright style but very remniscent of Marcellus in some ways. The styles differ a lot in some ways but his sound is beautiful, just different. Btw I'm on your side in terms of the newer "dark" sound being a little... boring? Ricardo has a few great recordings out there and is respectable as an orchestral player though. Wouldn't knock him just for preferring an ultra dark sound

@@thelookingcat thanks,,,well, perhaps steve sounds a bit nervous here,,the notes at the beginning are fast..maybe too fast as i think he misses a few,,also that big breath after the trill?? at an inappropriate time,,i cant see him winning an audition if he played the kodaly this way,,i know,,talk is cheap..but from a listeners prospective i am not impressed..as you say,,hearing a live performance might change my mind..i bet you would love louis desantis through the looking glass recording,,now that is a tone...also,,i think that is a yamaha clarinet? not a fan of those...wonder ,,i think these guys are more interested in making big bucks endorsing a product
