Chick Corea was simply a musical genius. I was fortunate to meet Chick at a Return To Forever gig on August 18,1974 at Doug Weston's Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. I'll never forget it! Chick enriched my life to no end! I have a German copy of Return To Forever featuring Chick Corea's Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy album with Chick, Stan, Bill and Lenny on the cover dressed in black in an album frame on my wall! One if the coolest ever album covers! I also have my favorite pic of Chick playing Acoustic Piano, wearing a wool cap, which was featured in "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of JAZZ" by Brian Case/Stan Britt/1978 in a picture frame. The pic is "Circle" era Chick Corea. R.I.P. ARMANDO ANTHONY "CHICK" COREA

The man was always around, like Notre Dame in Paris. A new project would come. New compositions would come. He would combine new combinations of players or reconnect with previous groups of players. I couldn’t keep up with his album output. He would discover new monster musicians I never heard of before, like Jeff Ballard, Pattitucci or Carlitos del Puerto. He fused styles. COVID came and he shared voluminously on KZbin which has been an amazing treat. He was supposed to always be here, like Notre Dame. The natural law of impermanence brings birth and it brings death - two sides of the same coin. It’s a universal law of nature, this impermanence. Without it we wouldn’t have birth, we wouldn’t have Chick Corea in the first place, and I wouldn’t be here to have him for a hero. Such an odd law of nature that is vital to existence. Thank you Chick for all you’ve given and for being an advocate for everyone’s creativity. Your music will last forever. I will never forget your magic. Such a deep loss that you’re suddenly gone. You pointed to the sun and to the moon. I miss you already.

Yep -- to me too, it seemed like he would always be around. That's why his sudden death shocked me. Also like you, his prolific output became hard for me to keep up with.

Chick was a very gifted composer and keyboard player who broke the mold. Like Miles, Chick was a visionary whose passion and creativity juxtaposed the genres of classical. jazz, rock and funk to totally transform fusion.!!! He will be sorely missed and never be equaled!!!! R.I.P..........

Wow, this is wonderful, parts 1 and 2. The production staff really got this together in great fashion. Noticed the name Bob Belden, maybe the same fella' that produced Joe Henderson's "Big Band". ALSO, "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs", is an all time great trio album, (along with the more conservative Bill Evans "Trio 65"). Thanks to all for putting this together!

Would be nice to hear Jarrett's words on Chick Corea. But my guess is it would be too hard.

They seemed to work nicely together on that Mozart project which can be found on youtube. Amazing stuff (search for "corea jarrett mozart").

I recently read on guitarist Scott Henderson's forum that Chick had a heroin addiction. He didn't say, but his remarks game me the impression that Chick kicked it when he became a Scientologist and got help from Narconon. This all shocked me because I always thought of Chick as someone who never used hard drugs. Does anyone else know anything about this?

Hey, I think that Herbie comment is out of context...I think he didn't mean to "forget" Zawinul, he was just talking about Chick and himself - a.ka two pianists.
@bholaoates15423 жыл бұрын
I agree. They were recording with Miles a couple of weeks before Zawinul joined them.
@atty1chgo14 жыл бұрын
Herbie conveniently forgets Joe Zawinul, who dominated the keyboard work on both Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way when talking about playing with Miles Davis, and who wrote much of the music on the two albums.
@bholaoates15423 жыл бұрын
Herbie and Chick were recording with Miles before Joe Zawinul joined in. The tunes "Two Faced", "Dual Mr. Anthony Tillman Process" and "Splash" were recorded on November 11-12, 1968 with just Herbie and Chick (see 'The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions' boxset). Then Joe came in the picture on November 25, 1968. That's probably why Herbie said it the way he did.
@atty1chgo14 жыл бұрын
@bobvanluijt it's a shame when a musician of the stature of Hancock ignores Zawinul's contributions on the two albums. Hancock basically played in the background while Joe smoked.
@bholaoates15423 жыл бұрын
I don't think Herbie ignored Joe. It's just that it was only Herbie and Chick at first.
@bobvanluijt14 жыл бұрын
@atty1chgo no, offcourse. But I think you assume (with the word: "conveniently") that he did it on purpose... And I wonder if that's true.
