The final fast lick reminds me A LOT of the final fast lick in Appaloosa by Gino Vannelli. I play that lick a lot and I couldn't help but notice the similarities. Fun stuff!

Nice stuff Pete - just gave you some coffees for the holdsworth in the mystery, and just found this. As you mention elsewhere here,m dancing on the ceiling is a fine pop solo. Don’t think Carlos gets the credit for such wonderful playing. Including the chord parts in dancing on the ceiling. Though if he wrote the song the royalties probably were credit enough. I’m just recovering very slowly from king covid (long but king kinda covers it). Before I got it in November 21 I’d just worked out both brother to brother and Appaloosa. He uses that same triplet down the Fm - and up the Db phrase (in variations) in both those. It’s a really neat way he gets around the changes.
@PeteCallard Жыл бұрын
Thanks Trevor, and thanks for the coffees! Sorry you’ve had a rough time with long covid, hope the recovery speeds up and you can get back to transcribing Carlos! It always surprises me that he’s not better known considering the high profile work that he’s done. He definitely gets good value from that triplet lick!

Great stuff!! He did not use harmonizer during that period, I think. Quote from Guitar Player (Feb. '87) article: "That was the beginning of the doubling approach that Carlos now employs for most of his recorded solos. He asks the engineer to slow the deck down 0.5% so the pitch of the double is a little different, which prodces a broad sound. ... '...If the deck can't be adjusted, I detune my guitar with a tuner. To recrate this effect live, I'm experimenting with stereo, where I mix Harmonizer and chorus on one channel while keeping other side dry'."
@PeteCallard3 жыл бұрын
That’s really interesting, thanks for all the information. It didn’t occur to me that he might have double tracked the solo to get that sound
@oscarmelendez92172 жыл бұрын
por favor , puedes explicar que es un "Harmonizer"=?
@SlikkTim2 жыл бұрын
Awesome video, playing and lesson ! From what I've read from various interviews of him, he used his workhorse Valley Arts strat with 3 EMG S pickups into a small Boogie for that. The "chorus" effect is most definitely an Eventide H3000 or similar wich was very popular back then. Any chance you do "Cool Weasel Boogie" ? That solo is the bee's knees... BTW - Chick Corea actually preferred Carlos Rios's solos, but Carlos was among the absolute first-grade, first call A listers in LA back then, and there was no way he was going to lose those constant high paying major label gigs to go on tour for jazz money ;-)
@PeteCallard2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, glad you liked it! That’s some brilliant background information, thank you. It’s a shame Carlos Rios isn’t better known considering the amount of stuff he’s done. Cool Weasel Boogie’s a good call, I’ll add it to the list…

@@PeteCallard Well, I think you can view it this way: millions of people throughout the world love the countless records he did sessions for, even if they don't know who he is. Isn't that the sincerest reward ? That, plus... he's probably paid as a mf ahaha ! But you're right though, many guitar players never heard of him and its a shame.
