Dave Weckl is one of the most *musical* drummers to ever sit behind the drum-set. This is a beautiful and ultra- inspiring performance.

Chick Corea has worked and played with some of the greatest drummers of all time over the years, Steve Gadd, Lenny White, Jack Dejohnette, Jeff Ballard, Vinnie Colaiuta, Roy Haynes, Marcus Gilmore, Gary Novak, Antonio Sanchez to name a few but i would put Dave Weckl as perhaps the finest all round drummer he has ever worked with. Weckl's solos are always the highlights of the show and he has a distinct sound on the kit that when you hear it, you know straight away it's him, he can play any style of music and he always excels in any setting whether it's acoustic or electric. I consider him to be my absolute favourite drummer ever and quite possibly the best in the world, just watch his opening drum solo from 0:00 to 3:15, it doesn't get any better than this!

For my money, this is the type of drumming vocabulary I like to hear. What a wonderful display of controlled dynamics, colorful phrasing and creative ideas! Nothing against all the great new drummers that have arrived on the scene since this video was recorded.

My dentist, here in Japan, plays jazz bass as a hobby. John Patitucci was so in hock over his daughter's education, that when he came to Japan for a gig, he had to borrow my dentist's instrument. It's a damn shame top jazz musicians aren't paid what they are worth.

It's interesting comparing this version to when Vinnie played with Chick at the Blue Note Tokyo. Here, it's very much Dave holding back, sensitive, giving others room to express and being a supportive accompanist. Whereas Vinnie was very much more a rock player's touch, domineering, I guess because of the excitement the music was just pouring out of Vinnie and Vinnie (and Chick and John) knew Vinnie was taking it to another level and that was okay. But in the end I like both versions, they're both magical and next level for very different reasons. The only thing Dave wins hands down on is the big hair! :P

Wow! The acoustics in this place are so different than in the place where they recorded "Alive." It's very boomy. I prefer the solo that he plays before "Humpty Dumpty" on the "Alive" cd, but that's just me. It's not nearly as long and he hints at the melody throughout.
