Its the first time I've heard Chick Corea playing a pop ballad. It's played more in his own style, his own interpretation. He doesn't really caress the song like a ballad but it shows his versatility

This is a most excellent study because you can compare the MLM transcript to the Hal Leonard songbook chart Chick is reading to analyze his ingenious approach. BTW it took a musical genius to write that song IMO! This song came out around 1979-80 but it still sounds fresh over 40 years later!

Hmmm, I don't hear it, and it would also be physically awkward to play in his right hand. Plus it parallels the chord on beat 1 down a half step. And, by looking at the video, it doesn't look like he's playing it in his left hand either.

His embellishments, though 'valid', lend an uncalled for 'hipness' that detracts from the rather simple message of the song. IMHO

I agree. Over- done. Makes you keep searching for the melody line, it's exhausting listening to this.
@JJR52
@JJR52 6 ай бұрын
@@abc456fhe’s literally playing the melody 70-80% of the time. Everything is else is based on the melody. If you need the melody spoon fed to you at all times, with nothing changed harmonically around it, that’s a you problem. I’m unloading here unfairly on you in particular but I’m so fed up of the mentality of I don’t get it/ like it so it’s bad…

@JJR52 It's cool. I understand jazz enthusiasts don't consider anything other than jazz to be worthwhile music. The music each of us likes is a totally subjective thing. So I was expressing my opinion. You're entitled to yours. But just because I find this performance "too much", doesn't make me someone who needs to be "spoon fed".
@JJR52
@JJR52 6 ай бұрын
@@abc456f I’m a music enthusiast. I love jazz as much as I love simple 4 chord pop, musical theatre, classical music, folk, gospel, indie, rock etc. Things don’t have to be complex to be moving, neither do they have to be simple. I’m not in denial that music is subjective, but that subjectivity is, in part, down to the depth of a listeners ear. Just because YOU can’t hear the melody in the very few sections that it isn’t played, doesn’t mean that this interpretation is less valid/ relevant than a simpler arrangement.
