I saw Chick perform at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ in the late 1980's ... He's an amazing player, but I was perplexed at his mid-show displeasure with the tuning of his piano. His technician came on stage and re-tuned it, MID PERFORMANCE ... As a pianist, teacher, and composer, I have a very astute "musical ear", and I have advanced relative pitch (close to, but unfortunately not quite absolute, aka perfect pitch) ... I could NOT identify any noticeable tuning improvement after the re-tune ... Perhaps there was a vibration he felt that bothered him?! ...
