I honestly don't think I've ever heard Stanley Clarke sound better than he does on this record. I absolutely love his playing. Acoustic bass chops through the roof, but also groove, tone, invention; all the guys on this track are really pushing their personal boundaries here and the raw energy practically breaks free of my headphones every time I listen to it.
A superclassic in the Jazz world and one of my absolute favourites from the genre.

I love this performance, and it's helped me greatly practising for my audition for conservatory. I hope you read this and have time to help me out if you can, but i've been having trouble feeling/playing the syncopated part starting at 2:05 -ish. Is there anything you can tell me to help me play this correctly? i find myself gravitating to playing the 5th of the chord on the 1 and unintentionally steamrolling over the actual recording. then later when it's no longer syncopated I'm lost in the track and need a couple pulses to get back into the rhythm. I wanna get this right, can't really go into conservatory audition as a bass player and ruining the feel of the song... :p

How’d you do? I’m a bassist and drummer. Obviously you’ve already taken care of this, but for the future and in other pieces... What I’d suggest that you do is chart out the parts that are giving you trouble as if the bass’s time signature was either 16th or 32nd note based, while the other instruments remain in 4/4. That way, you can really see the subtleties of where the bass notes actually fall over the polyrhythms. Play it with either a very slow metronome rhythm or a slowed down version from Light as a Feather. This is the same thing I’d do if a bass or drum part was in say, 17/8 time and I was losing the “one”. The section that you are looking at is basically a variation of a samba, and Afro-Cuban rhythms are based around the 2-3 or 3-2 son clave. Spend some time with clave based rhythms... other than being a lot of fun IMHO, it’s also really useful for bassists as well as drummers and pianists. Hopefully that helps you both figure out and feel these kinds of bass parts more naturally.
