Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (born June 12, 1941) is an American jazz and fusion pianist, keyboardist, and composer. Many of his compositions are considered jazz standards. As a member of Miles Davis' band in the 1960s, he participated in the birth of the electric jazz fusion movement. In the 1970s he formed Return to Forever. Along with Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and Keith Jarrett, he has been described as one of the major jazz piano voices to emerge in the post-John Coltrane era. Corea continued to pursue other collaborations and to explore various musical styles throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He is also known for promoting and fundraising for a number of social issues.

Münchner Klaviersommer (Munich Piano Summer) was a series of jazz concerts in Munich featuring various famous artists. Despite the name, not only pianists performed in these concerts. The concerts were usually held in July in the Philharmonic Hall Gasteig and they took place from 1981 to 1998. The sequel to the Munich Piano Summer is the Jazz Summer in the Bayerischer Hof at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof.

Came here to commune with Chick. Thank you for blowing my mind when I discovered your album in my parent's stash at age 6. Thank you for continually chasing shooting stars. Rest easy, Maestro.

RIP to my favorite musician and an inspiration since before I picked up a saxophone in 1973. High honor and life highlight that he complimented my playing in NYC a few years ago.

This is a treasure. So grateful that we have access to this version. It is a consummate Chick performance. Brilliant and unique while being true to the spirit of the composition. It was his willingness to express the music through his own individual vision that led Miles Davis to hire him. And, rightfully earned him the title of an artistic genius.

Roy Ayers vibes deeply rooted in my cascading mind that gets pleasant when music is appreciated. Chick Corea, a masterful, kind musician followed by so many who felt emotion when he was the strategy architect on the keyboard. thank you kindly. 🐬

This has the punk rock of Monk and (nearly) the technique of Tatum. I get that sometimes you just want to hear it played beautifully, like Hank Jones or Kenny Barron did. Or you want some other flavor (Michel Petrucciani seems to have a lot of fans here). But Chick brings something memorable to this warhorse, and he's totally in the moment, turning on a dime, and not doing a set schtick. KZbin at its best, bringing this little moment from so many years ago to the world.

Yeah, we already know you got a super awesome technique, Chick, but it just doesn't do justice to this song. Keith Jarrett's version, hands down the best. with Michel Petrucciani up there being it's so innovative.

kwixotic Yes, I’m sure he cares about your criticism. It’s not that you don’t like this version that is bothersome. It’s the way you talk down to him. We’re not all idiots out here.

like or dislike whatever you want, everybody has different taste, but please stop being so condescending about it. i think this rendition sounds very good and blew my mind several times. the originality and restraint he puts into it shows how much he respects the tune.

@@mikekane9881 Except that others here level that same criticism which may come across as mean spirited but Chick could easily render a better rendition if he wanted instead of this chaotic hodgepodge. It seems he's trying to prove what a technical genius he is(and he is) but it just doesn't do it for me.

@@ciousli I could hardly be so "condescending" to someone whose technique puts my own to shame but that doesn't keep me from nonetheless rendering an opinion about what I consider the "directionless" playing of this song with an apparent lack of good taste. If you still like it, then all the power to ya!

@@kwixotic sure man, not condescending at all. I play this tune a lot, hearing all those advanced harmonies and rhythms takes time. this version definitely isn't an easy one, but for trained ears it's all the more satisfying. you should probably be more cautious with dissing acclaimed geniuses like chick, chances just are that you're in over your head.

Hmmmmm, It's hard to pin down, but Chicks version doesn't seem "right" Too many jerky Spanish ornaments and flourishes, seemingly arbitrary styles changes. His harmonic sense doesn't do it for me. It doesn't respect Monk's versions or offer any thing that is appropriate or interesting. Maybe anybody who believes in Xenu and thetins, e meters etc. loses all perspective. Check out Michael Petrucciani, Wes Montgomery or any Monk versions for a more human approach.

John Keen Yes, agree completely it goes all over the place and quite likely he wanted to throw the whole kitchen sink in it but it only backfired into a chaotic maelstrom of unintelligible nonsense.

I agree that it doesn't sound "right" to me either, but I chalk that up to musical choices that Chick made, not his beliefs or his attitude to the world at large. I lack a formal music education, but from the little I've learned, it sounds like he's working within the contemporary styles where tonality and rhythm were more experimental and free. In that sense, he just took what Monk started and moved it further in the same direction.
