My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

The biggest baddest blower I had was one of my own creation. I took an old belt drive furnace fan, 208 cc Honda clone, some duct metal, bicycle brake control, idler pulley and arm from an old snow blower and an old lawn mower deck and made my own walk behind blower. It was engaged and disengaged with the bike brake handle and cable connected to the idler pulley to tighten the belt and manually through the engine speed control. Boy, that thing was powerful. Unfortunately the squirrel cage came apart and I ultimately scrapped it, Next time I do this I will be reinforcing the squirrel cage wheel.

As a former Echo dealer, I found Echo to be the most responsive to dealer service issues. At dealer tech updates, they'd always ask "what have you seen?" An Echo rep would write down problem areas on their equipment the techs mentioned. They would address most of these issues quickly. A great company to deal with, imo.

@james-rk5sd I said nothing about melting. Solder gets soft with higher temperatures. Vibration. Fatal combination. You will not find solder splices under the hood of automobiles. DoD, FAA, NASA, do not allow wires to be soldered to connectors. Get a small brass tube from the hobby shop which just fits over the wires. Cut about 1/2” length. Fit heat shrink over one wire. Insert stripped wires into tube, overlap the strands. Crush in a crimp tool which folds the center in to pinch the strands. Move the heat shrink over, shrink.

I have a 2005 John Deere 42 inch cut. With a 17.5 motor. The motor blew up. So I had a 24 horsepower motor to go on but I had another guy wire it. He said it needed another coil. And the choke wasn’t right and he didn’t know how to fix it. I know that the coil needs changed because it won’t start now or when it does it won’t stay running. And sometimes it backfires while trying to start it. Tim. From Ohio. Thank you for your time. God bless You have a great show..

Can you explain how a break or discontinuity in the coil kill can kill the engine. Usually the kill switch grounds the coil primary circuit to kill the ignition. A discontinuity seems like it would make the machine continue to run even if the switch were activated. Maybe the kill line is grounding where it is pinchd in that little slot? Thanks for showing this!
@TheGreasyShopRag
@TheGreasyShopRag Жыл бұрын
Rooster, I've seen this a lot as well. The wire she replaced has compromised insulation and is grounding to the engine or bracket that holds it. I wish she would have shown that. The quick home owner fix is to just smear some liquid electrical tape over that wire near the holder. You are correct, a squished wire or one pinched in a plastic shroud is not grounding the primary side of the coil.

Exactly right, and she never explained why swinging the nozzle way to the right would cause something here to kill the engine. The pinch points she mentioned were all plastic, and she didn't point out any wear points that could ground accidentally. I think she knows what's going on here, but I remain puzzled.

Our shop has sold over 200 8010s and 9010s and 910 Shindiawa's only real problem that we have seen with them is fuel filter pluging issues, mostly in commercial use. Have not seen any kill wire issues yet, but will keep it in mind. Commercial opperators just carry a fuel filter or two in truck and change it out when unit gets low on power or won't rev up. A few broken main frames from one gulf coarse that keeps droping them off carts is the only other issue we have seen with them.

Another entertaining and informative video. I don't have the 8010, but my neighbor does. I might be able to help him out someday. I enjoyed the "back-pack blower boogie" near the end. Also, I appreciated your comment about calling the manufacturer and getting the story that they have never heard of that issue before. I have a self-feeding drum sander in my wood shop that began mis-tracking a few months ago. I replaced the drive belt twice (at $65 a pop). I googled the issue and found it appeared to be a chronic problem, with no definite fixes. I called the manufacturer, got "that's a new one" and told them they might want to Google the problem as I had easily found several hundred folks with the same issue and little to no manufacturer support. After 3 buddies and I had tried to figure it out for weeks, I called a retired machinist friend to stare at it with me. He found the problem in about 1 minute. I bought a new drive roller with fresh, sharp knurling and the problem was fixed. Thx.

I worked on the adjust floor for CAT wheel tractor scrapers. We would fix issue in units after they came off the line. That department is not there any more because they figured it was better to just let the dealers fix the units when they got them or when the customer figured out something was wrong with it. The guy that trained me always felt like these were brand new units and just like you felt like when you got a new car it should be right when you drive off the lot. That is how he felt these units should be but CAT did not think that way. Guess it was a numbers game. If the problem did not show itself until after the warranty was up the customer paid to fix it

They really should listen.. if they don't they are missing the boat. Might be ego.. but more like the feedback loop to design is broken and your experience never gets where it can be used. well done.. 😀

Just an aside. The push connectors used on those wires have been problem children for decades. They are not designed for outdoor use contrary to what manufacturers may think. I first ran into them when servicing Honda Motorcycles in the late 1970's. The exposure to contaminants, rain, frost etc creates a corrosive environment and the plating on the metal used form a film. Additionally the connectors often use phosphor bronze and the constant vibration causes a loss of tension. When you combine the corrosion with loss of tension, it sits one up for intermittent failures. On the Hondas, the rider would be riding down the road and suddenly just lose power. That almost invariably tracked back to the wire to the magneto. The fix I used was like yours replace the wires, but also added dielectric grease to the connectors. This went a long ways to keeping out the moisture that caused the corrosion and once I made a repair using the grease, I had no further callbacks. Just my two cents and YMMV.

I run wires like that through a spring which protects the wires from rubbing through, and of course bends to suit the direction of the wires

What would have been the additional cost at the factory to have installed a better sleeve at potential wear sites on the wire? It seems to me that some of the new wires are coming out with very weak wear resistant insulation on some wires.

Sure if you are a factory and have to order 8,000 pre-crimped (assembled ) kill wires, and a supplier can come in with a cheaper rubber insulation (7% cost saving to the previous year's order of kill wires, guess which supplier gets the contract going forward?

We had an 8010 that had the screws from the starter recoil strip out. I tried to rethread it and it didnt work. Dealer had to put in an entire new short block. Crappy thing was echo wouldn't pay for the labor just the parts because they said I shouldn't have touched it. I moved over to the Stihl 800's and I haven't had any issues yet. We still have some old 770's and don't have any issues. Long story short I don't use that dealer anymore or echo blowers.

I know it’s a powerful machine, but I much prefer stihl br800. The echo looks like it’s homemade with plenty of exposed parts that can get snagged and damaged when working amongst bushes etc. The stihl with the waist pull start is another reason it’s my chosen blower. Compromise a little on power and opt for the old faithful Stihl.

A carpet cleaning truck that I would use 20 some years ago had a similar issue. It was the newest one they had, yet would randomly shut off and not want to start. they had the mechanic look at it and had it in the garage several times before they realized it had an intermittent break in the wire to the fuel pump.

Had an echo blower I bought at Home Depot. Paid more to get the Echo because I wanted a "good" one that will last. I had had good experience with one of their string trimmers. When the blower quick working around three years later it was "unfixable." I replaced the key electrical components. Nope. Fuel pathways. Nope. Rebuilt the carb. Nope. Bought a new carb. Nope. Tried a few other things. Checked every wire I could think of (but I'm not an electrician). Nope. I gave it away to my neighbor who has a lawn business, because he believes he can fix it. Nope. Occassionally, over the course of life, you'll own a machine that will noticeably improve your life when you give it away. That Echo blower was one of those machines. Realizing that I still hadn't bought a "real" machine we went to a garden equipment store and paid a little more for a Stihl. Never looked back. The difference was like night and day. The biggest challenge for two stroke engines is maintaining a good flow of clean fuel. After completely ignoring the Stihl recommendation to replace the fuel filter once a year it got a little sluggish after 3 years. Why did it run perfectly for so long? Because they build it with TWO alternate filters for the fuel to use in case one gets plugged. It was a easy fix once you understood the "in-tank" cofiguration. Since I was in there, I also changed the plug (I should do that again some day), checked the spark arrestor, etc. All good. We've had it about 6 years now and it still starts and runs like a top. I should probably change that fuel filter again. We love it. By the way: That day when the Stihl first ran sluggish because of the filter? I was able to restore it (till I got the parts) by rubbing my fingers on one of the filters. The Stihl filters are wrapped in a loose layer of mesh that allows you to temporarily restore function in the field by rubbing the gunk off of the mesh. Nice. I'm glad we gave that Echo away, but you are surely doing a lot of people a lot of good by running this video. Electrical problems can be a nightmare to trace down.
