My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

Always shoot a little WD40 in an old cylinder like that before testing compression. When they sit that long, all residual oil is gone and you'll get poor compression numbers virtually always, plus it's a lot better on the cylinder. Just a tip from a fellow small engine shop owner. I specialize in old saw restorations as well (when I have the time that is, lol).

This is what kills me when you see all these videos of guys "cold starting" that old car, truck, machine that hasn't been started for 30 years. They just get in and turn it over. Yeah, all that rust in the cylinder just got ground in to the surface with zero lubrication, all metal to metal.

"It ran the last time I used it" "It's hardly been used" Me: "but it's 40+ years old" "Just need to tweak the carb screws" "It'll only take a minute to get it running" "all it needs is just......"

- US Navy commenting: I retired after 20+ years. Never feel embarrassed if you retired at the E-6 paygrade. I joined when Reagan was president, where he was pushing for a 600 ship Navy. Ronny was just shy of that, at 596 strong in 1984. - Enter the big defense budget era. Too many decent ships were scrapped. One particular Cruiser was outfitted with nuclear reactors (with a 1,300 person crew). She was amazing. I witnessed her 8 month dismantling at the Portsmouth, Virginia drydock facility. It was a heartfelt site. The end result? An over-manned Navy with little room for advancement. I'm happily retired as an E-6 and this gal, ChickMechanic really rocks-the-boat with her knowledge. I subbed awhile ago *for* her in-depth explanations.

Oh my god, thank you for this episode! I stopped taking McCulloch crap into my shop in the 90's, I hate those machines. Not only the parts availability issues, but just overall they were designed so poorly, working on them was a zero money situation. To this day I have people phone or come in with a Mac and I immediately tell them I won't touch it. Bringing these into a shop is like playing Stairway To Heaven in a guitar store.

McCulloch was a very good line of professional saws back in the day when Robert McCulloch started the company. That was in 1943. He invented the one-man saw in 1949. Once they started targeting the homeowner/consumer market they became garbage, one of the very worst brands out there. McCulloch sold out to Husqvarna in 1999 and they still own and operate it today. Utter trash.

I couldn't agree more, in most cases the mcculloch saws aren't worth the time or effort. Unless there is some sentimental attachment, and even then just hang it on the wall, they are still fun to look at. Some of us people in the small engine community get a kick out of restoring an old saw like that and personally I love the old mcculloch saws but you have to be able to find parts for them. Yeah alot of people don't realize on those small 2 strokes their not just reliant on compression. They need to make consistent vacuum otherwise the fuel pump built into the carburetor isn't going to function correctly. Cylinder scoring is what kills your vacuum. No vacuum no fuel pump. You ever pull the carb off a 2 stroke engine look for the little orifice on the manifold block on the cylinder. That little hole is there for a reason.

When my sweet wife surprises the hell out of me with THE BIGGEST, HEAVEST McCullough chainsaw I have ever seen that she got from Lowe's, more suited for a lumber jack in Oregan. She was so proud of herself for surprising with such a great gift, I just didn't have the heart to act disappointed. Funny. Chickanic being that you're a young lady you maybe don't yet understand what it is with us older guys, that have this disease if you will, that have old things that were built well and have just worked for two decades or more and hope to make it last until we die. Case in point. I have a 25 + year old Stihl 036 pro that just worked and worked. Always started, ran, and after sitting for awhile always restarted. I thought I should upgrade and did with a Stihl MS362 with Adj. Carb controls. I'm not happy. Stupid flip fill caps, compression release leaks oil. Carb Adj. as lean as it will go and oil residue leaks out the muffler. Pull 2x on full choke then half choke and runs, but when choke released stumbles until SLOWLY increasing throttle. Works OK after that. Put it down for 30 minutes, outside temp 50º, gotta pull 3 or 4 time to start. So we like our old stuff that mostly works. Thanks for posting and I hope you can learn to deal with grumpy old men and their machines.

The pro Mac was the best saw I have ever owned. At over 5 cubic inches, it would power through hickory and oak like cutting butter. I purchased the saw used with a six foot bar on it. The original owner used the saw to cut tables tops out of recovered cypress trees. I had a 18 inch bar put on it and used the chains that came with it made into multiple chains that lasted me years. Sadly the carburetor failed about eight years after the company went under. My dealer searched but couldn’t find a replacement. This was long before the internet and Amazon.

Wow is that a pro Mac 5700 with the manual oil assist pump 👍 I love mine . About 9 years ago , a client of mine took it to a local small engine store because his employees couldn’t get it started - and asked them to service it , this is In Western Australia . The stor owner said the carbe was to old , and they couldn’t get parts ….. They were tolled to chuck it out and get a new machine 🤯 . They gave it to me - I CLEANED OUT THE CARBE - put new fuel lines on it - bingo …. Only just this year 2023 I managed to track down the 👉last chain sprocket for it ⚙️ in Western Australia 🥵😁 🎉 The original sprocket was only a few millimeters from being cut in half - 🤯.I managed to get an older style origan chain bar for it 🎉 ….I was so happy 😁 then within a week or two I dropped a small log on the ground Witch kicked up a smaller Branch THAT HIT THE FUKN CHAIN BREAK handle 🤦🏻‍♀️. Witch Is made of some kind of cast-alloy ? And the dammed thing snapped into 4 or 5 pieces 🤬🤤🤤 . I just couldn’t believe it 🤦🏻‍♀️ . I stood in place for about 2 minutes ‘’ just looking at the fukn thing in disbelief 👀 using my finest selection of Australian slang to describe how I was feeling about it . Dose anyone know where I might find a replacement chain break for it ? I still use it as is I’m just extra careful.

I think my 82' John Deere saw is a copy of an Echo. After sitting for MANY years I got it out and went through it. My cylinder was scored badly. I still went through the carb, clutch, bar, chain, new filter in the tank, string (pain in the A..) With that bit of freshening I was able to get the saw cranked and cutting. It does bog down a little but still stronger than my Stihl. The John Deere has lots of torque, Stihl has RPMs... no thanks, I love the JD power for boring through larger tree trunks.

I think the best chain saw I ever owned was a McCulloch. Everything was great until they replaced MTBE with Ethanol. When I tried to get parts for the rubber and other parts that was dissolved I found out they were out of business. Nothing I could do about it. It still had plenty of compression and was in great shape other than what ethanol did to it.

Why did they go out of business? I have one I use when I need to go through very large trees, and when my Ryobi gets stuck. No problems at all! For those curious the reason my Ryobi is the go-to is the electric keeps noise down, does not make me smell like fumes, and is easier to keep setting down.

🤣 If I had the time to make the trip from Pa, I'd bring you one of my old clapped out 48 belt drive walkbehinds....or the John Deere 48 somebody gave me because it was literally flooded....I turned the flywheel by hand before the winter and heard water sloshing around in there.

I'm sure at least half of the guys who drive long ways to bring you vintage equipment only do so to spend a few moments in the pleasure of your company.

My old McCulloch pulled hard like that after sitting years. Felt like decmpresion was not working. I removed the plug and air filter and sprayed wd40 into plug hole and down the carb. Keept pulling the rope and spraying wd40 down the carb and in the plug hole . Finaly it would pull easly with the plug in. It now runs like new.

The first chainsaw I ever fixed was a old Mcculloch Pro Mac 10-10S. The steel insert in the flywheel had come loose. I replaced the flywheel and it fired right up. Still runs fine 10 years later.

I never took anything cheaper than a riding mower to the repair shop. Weedeater? Push mower? If I can't fix it myself, I buy a new one. The minute a mechanic gets into it, I'm spending more than it's worth. Incidentally, my dad's chainsaw in my childhood is a Stihl. It outlived him and is sitting in a compartment right now, rotting away. I will probably try to refurb it soon. I might make an exception for it. After all, it was my dad's and has some sentimental value. At least it's from a company that's not out of business.

Yes, I totally agree with all of this. My situation is a tiny bit different, but I don't touch Shovelhead Harley Davidsons anymore, whatsoever. They were trash when they were new. I know I'll get flack on this, but I've been pulling wrench for roughly 32 years. 18,000 miles, & they need majored. But the guys gotta have them. I'm babbling, sorry 👊🖐️. Good show!

The clutch sprocket turned freely after the chain was removed, maybe there was just something caught in the sprocket teeth. However I did have a motorcycle weld its chain solid once, because of no lubrication. So maybe the chain was the faulty item.

Most shops won't even look at new handheld equipment that is not the brand they sell, like Stihl, Husqvarna, or Echo. And most shops will definitely not work on a saw like in this video, or a Ryobi, Troy Bilt, Craftsman, etc. Customer just brought in an old McCullough saw just like this one, last week. Recoil was stuck. Freed up the stuck recoil rope and then had to tap on the flywheel (with spark plug out) because the engine was stuck. Customer said he only wanted the recoil fixed. I call him to tell him I got it to pull over but wouldn't start. He asked me what I thought it was, even though he only wanted the recoil fixed. I said I don't know because he told me to stop at recoil repair. I don't like working on this old stuff either. People are funny.

I found that with MCulloch machinery they were obsolete when built, eg a guy I worked for had a brand new McCulloch strimmer the line head was cracked I rang McCulloch gave the technical department the model number and a number on the head, told me that the parts for it were obsolete and no one had any new old stock, ended up putting a Sparex one on,

Hey Chick - Recent subber - enjoy your videos! Retired gent - enjoy working on mechanical things. RE chainsaws - We live in a country setting - outskirts of Santa Rosa, Calif - wine country. Got a 1/3 acre property. Got trees. So I do need to do occasional chainsaw work. I actually happen to have a McCullough electric (plug in) chainsaw. Works ok! Just wanted to ask you if you could do a review of all these new BATTERY powered chainsaws. What do you think? Of course, for major cutting - daily - gas powered would be preferable - but occasional seasonal cutting?? Please do a video on battery powered chainsaws. Much appreciated!
