My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

122,000 acres for a lithium mine? Dear Lord. I remember growing up in the 60's and 70's, when they thought strip-mining a hillside for coal was the most evil thing in the world. But it looks like they found an even worse and more destructive way to make money.

I have 2 of the Husq's, one is rear wheel drive, the other all wheel drive. I had to MAKE one of those cables. Us old guys who used to ride dirt bikes learned early on how to make those cables (throttle, clutch, and brakes), AND make an adjuster for it (to dial it in, length wise). If there's a demand for them, maybe some of us old retired guys with the means could start making a few of those things.
@JechtAruon
@JechtAruon Жыл бұрын
That’s the problem with many repair shops they are use to ordering the parts when a cable is something they can make themselves. Just have to tell the customer you have to fabricate the part because the factory doesn’t make the part. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind it if it means they get their mower back and not watch it sit in a shop collecting dust.

Fewer people have lawns. Lawns cost a lot to maintain. They use huge amounts of water and fertilizer. I got rid of my lawn in 1997, and replaced it with native plant landscaping. Once established, you can shut off the water to most of the plants. Easier to maintain, cheaper, and looks nicer in my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, this is really just a convenience issue & for folks who want to go OEM only. Even if other manufacturers cables won't work, I know with bikes, they sell brake & shift cables of all different sizes, and you can even buy the cable in bulk and with (not too) special tools, cut and make your own. 3-D printer whiz kids should be able to make the ends that either clam-shell, or allow the cable to slot in and capture the jacket. In fact, with this much parts unavailability, I'd be surprised if this wasn't already solved in the DIY/maker-space.

I worked for the largest outdoor power tool distributor in the US back in the 70’s. We were the distributor for Merry Tiller, McCulloch chainsaws, Weed Eater , Snapper mowers and many other brands. We were also a distributor for Jacobsen Turf mowers, Cushman Turf trucksters , Hickendorn mowers, Myers’s turf sprayers and the list goes on and on. We covered five states with the turf division, I worked there almost 15 years when I graduated High School in 1973. I saw a lot of change in the 15 years I worked in this business so you should expect a lot more in the next 15. As much as people want things to stay the same they always change. Each time I changed jobs I always bettered myself and benefited my family. I’m retired now so I know how frustrating it can be when things change rapidly, you must keep learning and expanding if you want to stay in business. Best of luck. 😊

I went to purchase a cheap gas mower from a large, well-known home improvement center. They only had one left, the floor model, and it was missing the kill cable. I asked if they'd sell it at a discount to me, they said "No way!". I then offered to pay full price and they still wouldn't do it because it was missing a safety device (of course). I ended up pulling a discarded mower out of a dumpster and replacing the gasket between the carb and the cylinder head and it started and ran. Not ideal, but it serves my needs. I've given up on this new stuff.

I'm never getting a robot mower or vacuum. Mowing the lawn to me is a relaxing part of my week. So is vacuuming the house. Something so zen about making the lines in the lawn. I turn off the self-propel on the mower for most of it and get the extra workout from pushing with the heavier unit. I have the vacuum for the mid-summer dry period and the winter. In winter I have my snow blower and use it even to clear out our cul-de-sac before the plows come because of the feelings I have when completed are so calming. I have an Ego mower, but most of the time I use my 25 year old gas Craftsman. I do everything myself to keep it going for hopefully another 50 years. The Ego is for wife and daughter to use when I'm out of town.

Those kill handles are safety hazards. In that using for more than 10 minutes cuts off circulation to your fingers due to the springs on it having the strength of rail car springs. I tried to talk my sil out of buying 1 of those mowers but as soon as the salesman mentioned safety, she wallowed that line even though her sons will never touch a mower. I used it for 10 minutes and it took my purple fingers 2 days to recover full use. I told her never again. My new pushmower does not have that and I removed the guard at the blade exit so I could use the mower more effectively. The safety agenda creates more problems than it solves, and also sends a lot more people to the doctors offices for more drugs from big pharma.

I have always clamped those "kill handles" down so you don't have to hold them down. I used to have a riding mower, and it had a kill switch under the seat. I was constantly having to get off the mower to pick something up, and every time I did, I had to restart the engine. I jumpered the kill switch, and now I don't have to deal with that problem any more.

I love these idiotic "woke" posts. What a majority of those of you with this diatribe stuck in their heads haven't realized is that the market has shrunk due to not only EPA regulations, but also due to the fact that the markets where those regulations are the strictest are in high population areas. When your market shrinks that much, you cannot afford to maintain that business model. To give yourselves an idea as to why companies are doing this, pull up a skyline photo of Los Angeles in the summer of 1973 at about 3pm. Then, pull one up from this year. Notice anything? This isn't about being "woke". This is about breathable air.
