I just started a chicken compost run in my backyard. This a brand new beginning for Martys Garden and the micro-farm.
It's time to put the chickens to work, make a few extra dollars, reap fresh eggs and build soils simultaneously.

I have four baby chicks with eleven more due to hatch next Wednesday or Thursday. I'll keep you posted on the progress. Today's garden job is to replant sunflower, corn, tomatoes, peas, beans, lentils, raddish, broccoli and Clover. For chook food and also nitrogen fixing cover crops for the garden. G'day Marty and family, the wipeout would have been way worse if you weren't a surfer. Happy chooks, make a happy garden, makes happy and healthy humans. Unless they escape and get into the vege garden, mine found a way into the garden and in under one hour they destroyed all of the beds with seedlings just starting but at least it was all for their food anyway.

@@martysgarden that's cool I'm not upset at all as I'm getting around four to six eggs each day now, and as the weather warms up, you and I will be definitely getting more lovely fresh eggs. I just found out that eggs contain every mineral and vitamin that we humans need to survive except vitamin C. Which your coop is right next to a lime tree, perfect.

Can you show ways of making nesting boxes? What do you fill them with? Mine roam and lay eggs in the straw in the sheep pen it’s like an Easter egg hunt every day!!

Hi Bella, I will tour the coop later, as we are still in the building process of getting it done. We don't have eggs yet as the girls are still young and we need to introduce more protein to their diet. Thanks for watching!

Love your work. One thing that i learned from my chickens is that they seem to peck through all types of mesh, except for the metal mesh. They make their own escape holes :-D

Nice video Marty. That wood mulch you got looks great! We can only get the freshly chipped stuff for free down here. Oh btw. 1 cubic metre is about 35 cubic feet or a bit more than a cubic yard. I think you were working on square feet 😊 Those chickens look very well-fed and happy. Cheers!

@@martysgarden Yep. I can't even find somewhere near me where you can buy the shredded stuff. It's all chipped. At least I've got that unlimited used coffee source down here, great for the garden and reducing landfill. Makes me feel like an Eco warrior. 🤣

Are they protected from predators? Chickens are a predators buffet. They are so innocent.

Yes they are protected. Good fencing around our yard and back paddock is electrified.
