This is my automatic chicken door. In this video I filmed the locking mechanism to show how it works. Notice the pulley keeps spinning after the door fully shuts. I programmed this into the motor control code. This allows slack in the string which causes the door locks to fall into place. Then when the door rises the locks hinge out of the "locked" position. The angle on the locks and trim are 18 degrees. An angle is needed in order for the door locks to work. Also the pivot point needs to be as close the the left and right side of the door as possible.
The door is controlled with an Attiny84 Atmel microcontroller running the Arduino Tiny bootloader. I designed the code to take input from a light sensor and close the door at night and open it up at sunrise. There is also a manual door "up" and door "down" override switch.
