Thanks for sharing this. I've lost three ducks to raccoons in the last three weeks, and just built a large enclosure (with roof) out of 16 gauge 2" mesh. I will be adding this apron to supplement the mesh I buried, as I don't want to lose any more ducks.

😢 I'm doing the same and hoping not to ever lose my one pet duck.

My dad put concrete under my chicken coop to keep 🦊 and coyotes and weasels and owls🦉 and hawks and Kohl’s

How deep did your dad go with the concrete? I've been considering doing the same thing

I reused an old hunting dog kennel with concrete floor for my chicken coop. Still have predators from time to time try to dig in but they hit the concrete and give up. I have a good thick layer of dirt, leaves, and pine bedding on the floor for the birds so they aren't directly on the concrete. Best thing I did was use the structure with the concrete floor

We’re having an issue with rats living under the coops! Our buildings are on pallets. I wanted to bury 1/2 in hardware cloth a foot down then run an apron 2x3 openings 2 ft out. Is is more secure to bury the apron deeper? We have every predator out here…… dogs, coyotes, weasels, opossums, fishers, rats ……….

Not sure that spacing will keep rats out…

Is it necessary to run an apron in the inner part of the coop? Our most feared predator here in my area (that we have already had encounters with) is the racoon. We may also have a non- poisonous snakes and small rodents like rats and minks. My husband was thinking of putting down 2 ft inside and 3 foot on the outer. What are your thoughts?

where can I find the information on which type of predators I have in my area? I know we have the usual such as, coyote, raccoons, opossums, cats and some others. However, I don't know if we have weasels or minks, they are what frighten me the most, as they can squeeze into tiny spots.

What size wire is good for mink/weasels?
@edwardgingerwillis71813 жыл бұрын
We used 1/4 inch Galvanized Hardware cloth. Smaller Predators can not chew through hardware cloth but they can chew through chicken wire.

@@edwardgingerwillis7181 my run isn’t built yet, poor planning on my part… I screwed into base 1/2”HC and stapled with U Landscaping pins through dirt.. continuing to backfill and mulch (out 24” from coop. I used 200 screws n washers on exterior of farm store coop to install another layer of HC

I wish they would stop selling chicken wire to use for chicken coops 😩😭 the ONLY thing you should use is 19 gauge 1/2” hardware cloth.
@rapscallion34212 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a fox or coyote to me beings they usually take there kill with them and eat it in there own den/home. Weasels on the other hand are very easy to tell when they have been around, all of your chickens will be dead and stacked up in a nice neat pile, they will come back and eat when they need.

It's a shame all that work is put in to install a predator apron that doesn't keep out smaller predators like rats, mice, and young opossum, minks, or weasels (all of which can get through those large gaps with the type of mesh shown).
@Damselfly54315 Жыл бұрын
🤣 Not mine...gonna take a lot more than that...coop and yard will have it...coop should be unable to be gained access to but the yard thats another story...and predators oh boy do we have those...you name it its probably here...from a rat to a bear size!!! and all in between😬
