In the fall/winter time, the fallen leaves act as cover for a whole trove of bug life that is trying to survive the winter. I'm guessing that's why they like it.

If those darker birds are hens, it's probably not a bad thing. By the time they start laying, your adult hens will start slowing down on their laying and young hens will just start to up production. Plus, laying hens are really productive for 2 to 3 years and then they slow down, sometimes very substantially, so those younger hens will be a bit of a refresher for your flock. So in the end, it's probably not a bad thing to get a few hens by mistake. I'd look at it as a blessing. Thanks for the video and update...

Doing a great job Johnny! They are all doing good! I’ve missed a few vids, so I didn’t know when you got the pigs. Watch those characters..they can get aggressive towards chickens. Hope all goes well with the roosters. God bless my friend!🙏🎚🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾

I think that one of your barred rock chicks is a hen. Usually the females are darker and the males lighter. She also has a smaller comb.

I dig the chickens...they crack me up. We have a dozen adolescent hens raised from chicks. We picked up a big 10 month old rooster from the wife's co-worker a couple of weeks ago. I could not imagine have 2-dozen of them! My bride already wants to make dinner out of our Brewster the Rooster. The girls can't stand him...albeit he's pretty studly if you ask me. I mean, what male wouldn't love to have a harem handed to him? Thanks for the update video.

I have a broody hen that i relocated successfully. I built a small 2'x6' fenced in area for her with a plywood shelter for rain. i put new a nesting box under the shelter and filled it with shavings. i took the hen off her eggs and put her in the smaller area then i took the eggs and put them in the new nesting box. in less than 10 minutes she was back on the eggs.

Thanks for the update. Really enjoying the entire series, and like to think I've learned a thing or two about starting up an operation from scratch. About the fencing, back in the day, did country folks keeping a lot of chickens and having the acreage just accept that a few were going to be lost to predators or wandering, or is it that they would have had larger areas fenced off for chickens were the electric fencing available and economically feasible? With pigs of course pens were always a necessity given their higher value per animal and propensity to run off and go feral pr damage a neighbor's (or one's own) crops. An idea for an episode maybe is your experience and reasoning on scaling how many animals to yield X eggs/meat, cost benefit, etc. Just an idea.

So which breed of chickens are your favorite? Looks like you have healthy stock. Did you purchase directly from a hatchery? Love your channel.

I think ya may have a hen in with the roosters. Barred rock hens are much darker. One appears darker, and has dark running down front of legs onto toes. Not always a sure deal but for me usually 90%.

make a small enclosure just for your brooding hens. with the pecking order some hens have they may kill your chicks.

How old are your chicks? We were given some baby chicks and I'm trying to determine how old they are. They're fully feathered and just starting growing their combs. I have some barred rocks, but no idea what the others are! I love them!

I know that chickens will compete for the best roosting position. So , I made all of the roosting bars the same height. Problem solved.

Keep the hens to keep your numbers up for when a predator comes through. I have lost 6 birds in the last two weeks to a mink.

When you see a genetic abnormality with a specific individual, your first instinct should be to cull for uniformity in your flock, and preservation of resources. This is the moat you need to cross with poultry. Are they pets, or are they livestock? It doesn't feel right to cull one, but it definitely feels wrong to cull the whole flock because you left the bad apple in the bushel. Good luck.

What is wrong with them being broody? I don't know what this means?
@mmelgoza1983
@mmelgoza1983 2 жыл бұрын
It means that the hen is wanting to hatch some of her eggs. So they just sit on the eggs most of the time to keep the temperature. Not gonna work with unfertilized eggs, 😂😂😂
