When you called the sheep to move them and Blue popped up too, I could see a whole new dog... He's found his place to work and protect the herd. I'm glad that he has taken a turn for the better. The Glucosamine is excellent to help with stiffness. He needs a little essential oil necklace to keep the flies off though he doesn't seem to be bothered by them much. Great update!

which oils do you recommend?
@tara_a_santiago7 жыл бұрын
The Grass-fed Homestead ...For our dog we do a spray because she isn't outside a whole ton, but I make her a spray of 5oz cooled boiled water, you can just use distilled if you have it on hand though, 1/2 teaspoon of witch hazel, 15 drops of Melaleuca and 15 drops of Lavender. I use it on both my dog and US when out in the garden and it keeps everything away including mosquitos, gnats, flies. You can pick up a small essential oil necklace that you put the mixture in and hang from the collar, and it omits the scent and keeps things off, You would probably need to refill every few days, once the mixture is made it stays for weeks in a stainless sprayer. You could also just use the spray daily in the morning. I mist a few sprays over her body and two on her underside and I only have to apply every other day or so. She is t out 24 hours though, so maybe twice a day spraying for Blue. There are many different spray combos, but this one seems to work the best for us. 😀

Yay for a happy status update! Our Pyr was just a year old and in excellent health when she left her farm for the first time to come to live with us. It still took her a month to get over the stress of leaving her home, learn to trust us, and adapt to her new one. It was about three weeks in before we were woken up in the middle of the night to cheer her first territorial barks. About the same time, she started petting us back. Now, six months later, she is curled up at my feet, getting a good days sleep out of the summer heat.

Blue may be afraid of the camera because it is being held in your hand above the level if his head. See if he has the same reaction if the camera is on a tripod. It may even help if the tripod is set up by itself in his field so that he can see that it poses no threat.

Something I read from Joel Salatin is that he basically moves his chickens behind his grazers. So the chickens are in yestedays sheep spot. The big reason for this is the huge amount of insects in the sheep manure that will account for a lot of the calories the chickens need.
@TheGrassfedHomestead7 жыл бұрын
Joel moves the chickens 4 days behind the cows. Sooner than 4 days and the maggots aren't hatched yet. They don't follow the chickens behind the sheep at Polyface because sheep don't deposit huge patties. They are scattered pellets and don't benefit as much from chickens

Glad to hear you stuck it out with Blue and let him work himself out of the funk he was in. LGD dogs have a job to do sure... but dogs are dogs and they still form a bond with their owners. If they did not they would not let us near our live stock either as I see it. We are their pack and the livestock is the job. I'm sure he felt a lot of betrayal by his first owner (breeder) and lost heart at first. Blue will come around as long as he knows you have his best interests at heart. Our Aries, and American Pit Bull has worked my small farm for years and is invaluable when it comes to watching out for our kids when the does give birth. However he is still family and when he comes to retirement he will earn a spot by our woodstove with us.

Glad he's improved. How's all those weeds you had before? Did you get rid of them?
@TheGrassfedHomestead7 жыл бұрын
ha! No, the bracken fern still haunts me. The knappweed was being grazed when it was young and tender but now the sheep won't eat it since it has gotten woody. The tansy is stunted by the sheep though and the hawk weed is being destroyed by the sheep. Improvement over last year but the bracken is laying claim to almost 80% of our property. It has put a kink in the grazing plan for sure
@brianphilbrook52627 жыл бұрын
The Grass-fed Homestead yikes the battle continues lol. I wonder if you could do controlled burns on that bracken fern.
@TheGrassfedHomestead7 жыл бұрын
it makes it worse. Bracken is the first thing that emerges after a fire. The roots are unharmed by the heat but all the competitors get burned out.
@tradcathomestead81797 жыл бұрын
Dan, have you heard of an implement called the "brakenbruiser"? They use them mostly in the UK, pulled behind an ATV, and they smash the fern fronds. Supposed to be way more effective than mowing, and I know you don't want to spray. The idea is that the plant expends a bunch of energy reserves trying to repair the damage so it loses vitality and gives other plants a chance to compete better. They look like a miniature roller/crimper like what Gabe Brown and a lot of other folks use to knock back their covercrops before planting their cash crop. Basically a big drum with fins on it so that it smashes the stems and kills the plants without cutting or mowing leaving a nice residual behind. Something like that might be a good first step in a multi-step strategy to get the braken knocked back.
@brianphilbrook52627 жыл бұрын
The Grass-fed Homestead I went searching through some books I have and I found in Jerry Bakers book Supermarket Super Gardens an extra strength weed killer. It says "This potent formula is tailor made for tackling the toughest weeds in your yard- like those deep rooted perennials that just keep coming back... and coming back... and coming back. 1qt. of water 5tbsp. of white vinegar 2tbsp. of salt Bring the water to a boil, then stir in the vinegar and salt. While the liquid is still boiling or as close to it as possible, pour it directly on the weeds. Keep this potion away from plants you want to save or it will kill them along with the weeds." Might be worth trying maybe in a backpack sprayer. No deadly chemicals it'd be nasty tasting but it wouldn't hurt you or the animals.

Have you considered putting some layers with your sheep. Ben Falk does that and has really good result. He mentioned how one of the sheep he had died a few weeks after selling it because the chickens kept some of the insects under control. As soon as they were no longer with the sheep they got out of control and killed the sheep. Not suggesting you have that issue just wondering if you had any plans of putting a few chickens in with the sheep.
@TheGrassfedHomestead7 жыл бұрын
No, the chickens come in behind the sheep. They don't share a paddock. I don't want my sheep eating chicken feed. There are ways to go about keeping the sheep from the chickens' food but it is more trouble than it is worth. Ben had issues with fly strike which is an issue for wool sheep. I have mostly hair sheep so it is very little threat to my flock.
@AmerijamAcres7 жыл бұрын

You need to mix up some fly spray that Bri does for Dolly. Blue is an awesome dog. It is hard to move a dog from the home that they have known for so long and send them somewhere else. Puppies are ok, but older dogs, like Blue, don't take to moving to all new surroundings very good.

So great that Blue has improved up to this point. That breeder should've bestowed a free dog upon you anyway for taking on Blue and nursing home back to health. So sooo glad to hear that he offered at least on the retiring Blue option and keeping as a pet, had that been necessary! Either he's got ethics or he realized he would've become public enemy#1 in the breeder category on social media if he didn't offer to take good care of you and Blue. At least the internet is good for something, lol. I'm curious to know if Blue has papers to indicate his exact age? He does look a tad older than six y/o. so the other thing i want to tell you about that could help blue... i was on a kibble diet with my 4 dogs then i got the 2 LDG pups...now nearly 6m old...BOTH have had nothing but expensive vet visits weekly every other week...ear infections they never went away, CONSTANT meds for UI, rashes, limping, aches and pains with normal wear and tear and puppy play, vanginitus that would not go away...i researched and others with these dogs...mine are Pyrenees and anatolian sheppard...said they had all these issues and other musclulosketal issues..said it was the kibble.....i looked up the bloat issues...i mean lets think about it...dogs have not DE-VOLVED TO NO LONGER NEEDING A NATURAL DIET...kibble is NOT Natural....in nature they are scavengers and would eat small prey....eating raw MEATY bones does not make them want to kill either....it helps their dental which left unchecked feed ill health and disease and for a working dog it is hard to be living with a rotting tooth....might cause a headache....my sister-in-law had one and she nearly died from it....so if humans dont let teeth JUST DIE...why would we do it to an animal that we expect to WORK or a loved pet? anyways...all the condroiton and glucosimine are found in the soft uncooked bones , tendons and legiments...it is what THEY NEED AND NEVEER GET....most ppl feed cheapest kibble...which is all quality contol left to food makers and it is WIDELY KNOWN that kibble has dead and diseased euthanized animals in the feed...and what ever it started out s ingredient wise is VERY DIMINISHED and so nutrition is less available in the cooked extruded kibble bits. i really HOPE THAT YOU WILL LOOK INTO ALL THIS INFO TO HELP BLUE or another dog....since they work and because you may get a pet and you have easy access to food they NEED. please keep updating.

Depending how long it takes to train a dog, I would be inclined to get another much younger dog. They become good companions of one another and the older will teach the younger. I'm not an expert in any way about dogs but I sure have observed them herd my grandchildren. My daughter had two malamutes, a lab and a Sammy. The Sammy taught the others how to herd. When my youngest granddaughter went to step down from the kitchen into the family room, the Malamute just lowered her shoulder and pushed her back into the kitchen to protect her from falling. Then came my grandson John Thomas. We would put him on a blanket in the middle of the family room at 3 to 4 months. The dogs made a square around him and as he fell asleep, they shrank the square to be sure he was warm. Later, Sarah took the Sammy out before bedtime. It was a starry night and she realized the Sammy was not doing anything. Looking she saw the Sammy had his jaws firmly affixed to the hind leg of a big buck. I asked her what she did: "Oh, he's trained to herd reindeer, one word "Off!", she let go and the buck was off in a flash." So, if you can afford it get Blue a younger companion; I think he will do most of the training.
