True story according to El Debarge. He wrote the song when he was 16 years old and didn't really think anyone else was going to like it. It took Chico to convince him to record the song. Chico was like "Bro, are you crazy".

Damn El still has it. No one comes through all that bad habit abuse and still comes out dapper, solid, and with that voice preserved like it hasn't been touched by the bad of life! I'm grateful life still has given him really a second chance like that. On a side note it warms my heart to see he and his lil brother Chico are type like that. That's whassup. Bless DeBarge. I'm a big fan of El but I don't really see how you can compare Whitney's losing her voice to El keeping his. While El was successful Whitney had more success and therefore did way more performances than El and on top of that Whitney had throat surgery. All of this caused vocal strain and therefore was a major cause of her losing her voice.
