from "Construção" (1971).
The translation and the video are not mine (all credits go to MHumberto, here: • Video , thank you), I just edited it to fit the song only (probably my favorite one ever).

One of the best pieces of music ever recorded, words, music, arangement, performances all perfect. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

DAMN this one motherfucker of a masterpiece! Perfect song enhanced by Rogerio Duprat's orchestration - and the lyrics just blow your mind (they're even better in portuguese than the translation). Chico = genius.

It's worth it to learn Portuguese just to understand it in the original.

Nem só o Chico, Alvarenga e Ranchinho tem uma música de 1942(30 ANOS ANTES), DRAMA DE ANGÉLICA, também só com proparoxítonas, e com mais rimas do que Construção, dá uma checada no youtube

"Shall God bless you." talvez fosse mais dentro do contexto, nao?

It is a song about the poor working class. They are pooor, they have a little, they work a lot and - mostly at the time this song was written and released - it was commom for that ""type"" of people to have problems about alcohol, you know? Is is a scape of life, drinking to forget problems, to forget about how poor he is, to forget problems about his family, to forget all the problems about his miserable life. So he was crying because he was depressed and also dancing because he drank. But also you have to notice that this song is divided by three parts: the first one shows a poor worker, with a miserable life, a simple person who drinks to forget how shitty life is, but still a honest person, loving his wife, depressed, working a lot and that sadly dies, but no one cares about his life, people just care about the fact that his death disrupts the traffic. his life can also be seen as a suicide, because he started the day doing things like he knew it was the last time (the last time to kiss his wife, last time to enjoy a meal...) the seconds part shows a diferent point of view, is shows from a perpective of a person looking to this man, looking to this worker as a uselees, ignorant, always drunk that doesnt work well, unfaithfull ("kissed his woman as if she was the only one" gives the idea that he has others)and that eventually dies causing trouble to the ""good public"". It shows a view of prejudiced ppl judging the worker as vagabond, as if ppl dont care about his life, just care about the fact that it interrupted their lifes. and the third part take out the humanity of the worker, makes it looks as a machine, dont even say much about him, as if he doesnt mean anything. It shows workers as a number, like their lifes or deaths has no value and at the end is sarcastic, It thanks for having a bad life. "Deus lhe pague" is a expression usually used by simple ppl to thank. so, it is like "Hey, Gorvenment and Brazil, thanks you for the miserable life". It is criticism about the period in Brazil that ""army/military"" rulled the country, as a totalitary gorvenment, ppl could not complain, there were censure in newspapper and all kind of art, ppl were tortured and killed. I hope it helps you to understand :)
