I always adore Chief Hanlon. When you have crooks like Kimball and Oliver, it's always great to see someone that actually cares like Hanlon. Personally, I feel his actions are completely justified. The NCR was running itself too thin and was facing too many fronts to handle everything. Bitter Springs was left in desperation, they have to deal with Fiend a block away from their main camp, one of their most strategic points was lost to Lakelurks because the brass didn't believe them, Forlorn Hope was getting picked off bit by bit with no help. Hanlon at the radio could probably hear it all. He could see that there was little he could actually do with his higher-up ignoring him. He could see just how stupid Oliver's plan of defense was. The fact that the only reason he believes they have a chance is if Caesar is dying or dead just shows how little faith he has in the campaign. It was better if they retreated and build up their strength. It would have to take a miracle for them to win. Which it would have in the form of the Courier.
@ultimatepunster58502 жыл бұрын
While I have no real problems with the NCR, as I go for their ending in basically all my playthroughs, even I admit that Oliver is way too petty. Seriously got so butthurt over the Rangers victory over Hoover Dam that he does every possible thing in his power to subvert Hanlon. I've seen better behaviour from kindergartners. Oh if only I could get an NCR victory while also calling Oliver a jackass. I know you can throw him off the dam in a Yes Man ending but as much as I dislike him I don't really think he deserves to die over it.

Another thing is that the rangers are truly only 40-50 years old and is still very small- Chief Hanlon was quite literally there for the birth of that military branch so many officers probably would have been old squad mates and friends of Hanlons or people who were personally trained by him. No wonder the man didn’t want to see them sent on death missions; he probably remembered them from their boot camp/schooling days.

So, to those who think it's odd for Hanlon to alter field reports, I think it actually fits his character well. He's an old soldier, who's had more than his fair share of combat. Any officer in command of any unit cares for the safety and security of their men. Hanlon, rightly, I might add, believes that the NCR's war in the Mojave is unwinnable at the current stage its at, HOWEVER, too many politicians have made winning this war a focal point in their campaign to just pull out. Hanlon, understands fully what he's doing is not just treasonous, but could and likely HAS costed troopers their lives, however, because he believes that expediting the NCR's withdrawl from the Mojave region will save far more lives in the future, then the ones tragically ended by his ongoing scheme he can justify it to himself as not just looking out for his men (trying to get them home, fast) but also doing what he believes is best for the country. Many, many military leaders have in the past have publicly disagreed with the way wars/military strategy in general were being conducted. The biggest example I can think of is Douglas MacArthur being fired due to his public disagreement with Truman about tactics and strategy during the Korean conflict. Good military officers will do what they believe to be the best course of action for their men, even if it breaks regulations, laws, etc. Hanlon was just an officer doing what he thought was best for his men.

I believe the Legion winning the Hoover Dam Battle is good for the wastelands in the long run, now before you label me as a Legionboo let me say this very clearly first, I don't like the legion or believe in anything they propagrate. If the Legion wins then the incompetent higher ups would be replaced by public opinion, Oliver will be replaced by Hanlon who is more experienced in guerilla warfare and warfare in general, and Kimball will be dead by assassination in a twist of irony. This will obviously weaken the NCR but if you help the NCR but let help the Legion win the Battle then they can easily regain the upper hand as the Legion supply line will be stretched to its limits and with Hanlon in charge of the military they'll be facing a more experienced, hardened, and very angry populace.

I think this video leaned me towards a Mr. House/Independent Ending, especially his story about Baja. Why kill everyone coming to the water hole (NCR/Legion) when it should be it's own entity. Besides, if the NCR won I feel like Kimball would order them further east and create a new no-mans land standoff with the Legion, and of course there would still be a logistical nightmare. You can still be punchy and not support the NCR, even the Rangers don't stand entirely with them.

Never realized the NCR troops did a sideways retreat in the 1st battle, not sure I have heard of something like that being done without the use of cavalry or a second group with the intent to flank and rout like with Hannibal in 2nd Punic (except less retreating and more staying still) or the bull and horns with Shaka Zulu. Any military history nerds know a historical example of this single sideways movement of the vanguard with the retreat of a ranged unit behind it? Or any other unit, I suppose, since the specifics of fallout make it really different from historical warfare.

If this was real, the way I see it, Hanlon had lost his nerve. His sabotage was shortsighted, and he was one step away from becoming a coward. Although it was respectable because he cared, giving misinformation after losing your senses is no different than throwing a hand grenade into your commander's foxhole so you could prevent going into battle. The NCR needed a leader who marches with an iron fist and learns from their mistakes or defeat, hence why the Courier is a single grain of rice that tips the scale. If you can't fight, go home. I'll raze the whole Legion with a Fatman and the King's cyberdog myself, with or without you.
@PlagueDocterBella562 ай бұрын
Well, the Courier isn't just a single grain of rice are they. Realistically, it's crazy that everything gets done by a single person (much less that same person goes on to save the world or at least the west three separate times). The problem is also that the NCR doesn't have a leader in control. President Kimbal is keeping all the best soldiers tided up fighting for the brahmin barons while keeping his best buddy, the laughably incompetent General Oliver, in charge of the Mojave campaign.

Is this still debated a lot? Yes what Chief Hanlon did was kind of messed up. Falsifying reports to put soldiers on the frontlines into bordering on a nervous wreck that maybe a brawl in the Mojave or Hoover Dam might be a bad idea, but when you were dealing a force like Caesar's Legion, who were notorious for using non-conventional tactics, sometimes just the very notion can keep a standing army's eye on the ball, just to anticipate possibilities. A complacent army, is a dead army no matter how well equipped it is and sometimes psychological warfare is MUCH more important than actual boots on the ground. More importantly though, Hanlon knew that with New Vegas milking their forces dry on revenue, the Legions same guerilla tactics and possible same results with the Great Khans, it was only a matter of time before it might have caused the NCR to buckle under its own weight. You can literally ask any number of soldiers that the NCR's sinkhole politics and what was costing them. When scouts first got Hoover Dam it was just greed on the NCR's governing body that got them interested, not actually protecting their own citizens/soldiers, kind of like how our CURRENT government is sometimes. Sharon Cassidy is absolutely right, "ever had a brother, an idiot brother who knocked up the Pastors wife and his home away is padded cell? That's NCR, their compass is spinning all the time." It makes me wonder if and when the NCR might make it all the way into Texas or even the Eastern Seaboard.

Chief Hanlon was WRONG! If he had any amount of optimism and balls, he would've denounced Oliver, denounced Kimball and ordered his rangers to come up from Baja ASAP. He should have subverted their orders and INSIST that he knows better, because he does. Instead, he took the wrong path, the coward's path, and chose sabotage. The troopers AND rangers both would have respected Hanlon's show of force had he openly defied Oliver & Kimball. He won the dam. You might say "well they'd just fire Hanlon" NOPE WRONG! If that were true, NCR's top brass woulda been out on their ass a long time ago. Hanlon has too much power to simply be removed. He has the people's love. The NCR is far stronger than what Hanlon believes. His rangers have almost infinite talent. They annexed Vegas. Money & supplies are pouring in from California. Their numbers are vastly superior to the Legion. Hanlon is not only wrong but stupid for thinking he can get the NCR to pull out. Allocating NCR's resources efficiently is all they need to win against the Legion. Colonel Hsu represents the best of the NCR. Chief Hanlon represents the worst.
@PlagueDocterBella562 ай бұрын

Even if they could, they still have the Brotherhood of Steel, the Great Khans, the Omertas, the Fiends, the Jackals, the Vipers, the Scorpions, the Greasers, the Powder Gangers, and the 80's that they can't deal with.
