From Japan "Dice" has great rhythms and melodies, as well as Kobato's great lyrics . The girl is blindfolded, hugging a doll and in the dark, but at the end of the song she removes her blindfold and begins walking in the light. Since the "dice" are always rolled, we have to stand up and start walking even in an uneasy society. It is cheering song to support the independence of women.

I think the reason so many people feel like BAND MAID's music reminds them of something from "back in the day" is that they have a very classic rock sound, with elements of many other genres blended in. I think I've heard people say it reminds them of everything from 70s-00s music, and there are elements of all those decades popping up in their music. I think the genius of the band is that they somehow managed to distill down the essence of 4 decades of pop, punk, rock, metal, etc. without sounding old, tired, or dated with their music. Almost anyone can listen to them and hear something that triggers that nostalgic reaction as a result, but with enormous musical talent and enough song creativity and complexity to make a lot of their music instant classics imho. Combine that with 5 women who seems to truly enjoy what they are doing and a band that is more organic and less manufactured, and the only way I can describe them is superb.
@Chief3223 жыл бұрын
I think you absolutely hit the nail on the head there, my friend. It feels like with so many flavours in there, mixed so well and presented in such a wonderful way, you'd be hard pressed to find somebody that doesn't find something they like in here. Also, like you say, when you throw passion on top of that it really makes for something extra special. It only makes me more excited to keep listening tbh. I already know there are songs I haven't heard yet that I'll be completely in love with.
@zelbinian3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this. It's pretty clear that a key - perhaps the key - element of their sound is deliberate homage to pre-2000's western rock. This makes them sound very familiar but the way that they blend different subgenres of rock together (not to mention their musicianship, songcraft, and musical chemistry) also gives them a sound that is all their own. Familiar, yet distinct. It's the mainstream rock holy grail. And they do it over and over and over again.

There is no right or wrong in listening to Band Maid - just keep listening. They love to pull in elements from many genres when building their music. Kanami (lead guitar) writes the music and Miku (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) does the lyrics, but they still get input from the rest of the band. I think it is one of the reasons that their music keeps evolving and avoids ruts. They do have a "sound" but it isn't the same in each song or each album. Finally, when they started, Miku couldn't play, but she's been learning from Kanami and now has a respectable level of talent which opens up the musical options even farther. Kanami will also do things like ask Akane (drums) what is the fastest she can play and then write the song for an even faster beat - which Akane will manage to play, even though she didn't think she could. Band Maid is simply one of the best rock bands in existence today and an added bonuses is how much they enjoy what they are doing and how much they enjoy each other. When you do watch a live performance like Freedom, you will see that very clearly. Welcome to the Pigeon Hole (eventually, the reference will make sense), it will be a marvelous journey.
@Chief3223 жыл бұрын
I bet you're absolutely right, friend. In the “Thrill” days, BAND-MAID’s record company was having the songs written for them, although the band was submitting a lot of songs for consideration. The first song wholly written by the band was “Alone” which you might want to try. After “Alone” the band has been composing all their own music (with one or two exceptions). “Dice” is typical BAND-MAID, if there’s such a thing, fantastic musicianship, terrific vocals, catchy choruses, seamless transitions and no two songs alike. Lead guitar Kanami composes the music and rhythm guitar/band founder Miku writes the lyrics. Next level talent in this band.

Man, when you do see them play live you'll understand what happiness really is. I'm pretty sure they are having more fun then the audience. @nem4473 жыл бұрын
In most of their songs they change it up slightly in the verses and pre-choruses rather than a straight cookie cutter repeat, which for me is one of the elements that makes them so interesting.

Band-Maid has perfected the art of the catchy chorus. They're the masters of it.
@ElfInflicted3 жыл бұрын
There's something late-90's rock about that chorus. The way it switches into a major key and gets even more upbeat. I feel like it was something that was a trend among several bands at the time, but I couldn't name any one in particular. Maybe something AC/DC about the tone from the lead guitarist and the riff she used going into the verses? Something like that.
@jamesskyway67463 жыл бұрын
Band-Maid was the inspiration of Miku Kobato. (back up vocals.rhythm guitar. wears red flower.) She worked in a maid cafe and thot it would be a good idea to form a rock band based on that. She found guitarist Konami by internet search. Konami suggested drummer Akane who in turn suggested bassist Misa. They at first were going to go with Miku on vocals but decided to add Saiki on vocals. The story goes that they kept the whole maid outfit thing a secret from Saiki as they thought she would not go for it. If you notice in early videos, Saiki is wearing an apron.

I don't know where people got these from, but I met them when they came to NYC back in 2019 at the meet and greet. They are all really tiny, Kanami is barely 5 feet tall, if that. Miku is a little bit shorter if it wasn't for the 2" heels she typically wears. Saiki is in tall heels, so I would say she's about 5' 1" in bare feet. Akane is about the same height. If MISA was as tall as some are claiming, she would tower over the others, but look at any group photo and it's obvious that's not the case. MISA is around 5' 2".

Your trying to figure out how to approach Band-Maid has brought to mind a problem I've thought about for newer fans. The Maidiacs who've been around since the early days had a HUGE advantage in the live video department. Because back then "Moratorium", "Puzzle", "Awkward", and other AMAZING songs by them were making the rounds on KZbin. The reason I say it's an advantage over the live stuff of now, is because throughout the years, Band-Maid has evolved in influences and style. And those videos were perfect representation of their sound at that time. (JUST before Dice's video came out I'd say. Same ballpark time frame.) But now the only way to get a view on them is to find an old fan who downloaded them back then for histories sake. I wouldn't say react to these videos because they will likely get taken down, or whatever. But they are huge parts of what made me love them back then. They will blow you away. So put out the call on one of your future Band-Maid videos. One of the Maidiacs will hook you up, and listen to it on your own time when you feel ready for live shows, then tell us how ya feel about them later. I know I'd love to hear it. Also, I'd suggest following up on interviews and what not, like some others are suggesting. Because not only is their sound amazing, but they, as people, are as well. Miku is the hardest working crazy pigeon I've ever seen. MISA is so effortlessly cool, but at the same time shy and awkward when put on the spot (and has this awesome trick where she tucks her pick away between her front two fingers to play slap bass, then flicks it back to play with the pick again without missing a beat.), Akane is a gorilla metronome with a bottomless pit for a stomach, and a love of anime, and happens to be a huge goofball. Saiki is a rock queen personified unless you catch her off guard and you get to be treated to her caring, playful sides. And Kanami... The musical genius Goddess of the shred. So shy, unassuming, and quiet... Until you put an instrument in her hands. Then out comes the unpredictable rocker persona she keeps tucked away. As it takes over and axe kicks Akane's drum kit, or starts shouting at the crowd, or jumps on top of a set piece to shred even more epically. ........ uh. Went on a bit of a tangent there. Sorry bout that. Ahem. Long story short. (Too late) Ask someone for old live videos of good quality. Listen to them on own time. And check out the people behind the band. You will love them even more. And the Maidiacs, will likely start following you the more you honestly care about this band. Because we love to re-live our first experiences with Band-Maid vicariously through reactors. But only if they are truly into the band. (There are a lot who just watch them for the views) Looking forward to seeing more.

♥ Band Maid - I'd suggest the following songs: Bubble, Manners, The Dragon Cries, Turn Me On & Real Existence (all videos/audio) Dunno if this helps, but an early Band Maid reactor said the riff sounds similar to a Nickleback (ugh - as if) song from early 2000s?
@Chief3223 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Bekka! I’ve made notes on my very messy google doc lol! Hmmm.. I was never the biggest Nickelback fan haha! I’ll have to take their word on that one lol
@lurkmerchant3 жыл бұрын
Then other reactor would mention names like Rush, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tool, GnR, etc, etc...I bet Kanami gets inspirations from all the sounds and noise her ears pick up and liked, including whatever suggested by band members.

They have a sound that is purely theirs. Their influences are completely on display, but in a good way. No matter what they do it always sounds like them, even when the songs are radically different from one another. They have a chemistry that can't be manufactured. It's a thing of beauty. Definitely do Domination live soon, it's something you need to see now that you've seen this. :-)
@Chief3223 жыл бұрын
Honestly though! It's such an amazing thing to hear, it's like having a cocktail mixed so well that you can taste every single ingredient but couldn't say with any certainty what any of them are. It's definitely unique to say the very least! Domination! I got you, notes are being made as we speak! :) Thank you, bro!

Every persons Band Maid experience is a little different. Except for being blown away by their talent. But I agree with you that pushing the live videos isn't necessarily best for all new fans. Their music videos give you a perspective on how versatile they truly are. Then you can watch the live vids and be amazed at how impressive they are as performers. You are on the right track.

It makes me happy like GNR did back then. Like Duff and Slash, slapping you in the face with Izzy under filling the sound up. Obviously, the intricate time changes didn't happen much with GNR, but the employability is the same.

Hello Chief 322, Am enjoying your Band-Maid reaction videos. Like you, I (long-time hardrock/metal head) am discovering Band-Maid. And, like you, I am blown away by the, I'll call it "musicality" of their compositions and arrangements. I love that their mixes always feature everything in sonic proportion, so you can hear everything, from Akane's relentless, powerhouse drumming, Misa's fantastic bass lines, Kanami's terrific lead work, Miku's guitar and vocals, to Saiki's powerful and melodic lead vocals. I liked the mixing of "World Domination" best, though I have the latest, "Unseen World" on order from Japan. You have got to hear "Without Holding Back" from release "Unseen World". The song starts at 02.00. kzbin.info/www/bejne/opOaaIuMq8dli80 doraemon nobita, thank you so much for putting together the Band-Maid timeline. You know this band didn't just spring up, fully formed, they had to come from somewhere. I saw a couple of videos featuring Kanami's and Saiki's pre-Band-Maid work. They could not be further than what Band-Maid puts out today. (And your English is superb). Chief 322, if you're interested in some of their lyrics, I want to point you in the direction of "Don't Let Me Down" from their "New Beginnings" CD. Very suggestive. I'm sure there are others, I just can't understand Kanji. :)

I’m glad you said this is making you feel nostalgic and you don’t know why. I had the same feeling with several of their songs. Its because they take a lot of audio cues and soundscapes from early 2000’s rock, punk, and metal. This is basically what 00’s music should have evolved into in the west instead of dying and replaced with indie rock.I’ve noticed too many of these cues to count but off the top of my head I know Blooming’s bass and drums before the solo is reminiscent to the intro of Finger Eleven’s Good Times. I wanna say Non fiction days into is reminiscent of Hoobastank’s Crawling in the dark intro, one of them takes an audio cue from Incubus, and there’s a few dozen more that scream early 2000’s, especially the mic filter they use in a lot of songs that was most prevalent during that time. This songs is 100% unabashedly early 00’s pop punk. I can’t tell you what song in particular, but that’s exactly where the song draws inspiration. I love it. Being able to feel nostalgia for something new and better than you remember is just a magical feeling.

@@Chief322 well said. Granted there are more influences than just these but little tid bits for ya incase no one else has gotten to it first. Kanami has said two of her biggest influences were Santana and Van Halen. MISA draws influences from The Pixies and The Smashing Pumpkins. Akane - Deep Purple and Maximum the Hormone. Miku - obviously trained by Kanami but has also cited Maximum the Hormone. Of course you can here tons of other influences as well.
