you need to connect phone and headset to the chigee or they will get confused when you recive a call

How or can you use it as a stand alone gps? I assume you can since it has a gps receiver but none of the videos i have watched demonstrate this

No, you need to pair it with a phone. The GPS is (I believe) to actually give you GPS info on the display.
