Made this video to give you guys a good idea of what I do when I check the Child Check-Mate systems every Friday to make sure the horns are functional on buses where the driver didn't verify proper operation in that given week. Every Tuesday, we are required to check the horns by turning the key off with the Child Check-Mate system activated and waiting until the horn goes off. I check the horn on my bus every day as a part of my pre-trip inspection. If any given bus has a horn check that is not completed by Thursday morning, the "Horn Police" leave yellow warning slips in the buses that have not been checked for proper horn operation. If the check is still not done by Friday morning, that's where I come in. Since we aren't allowed to use charter mode on the lot, my task is to go out with my boss's key fob, trip the motion sensors in the buses with pending horn checks, then shut the horn off with the fob. If any motion sensors don't set the horn off, it means the system is in Theft-Mate (as opposed to Double Check which is the function that sounds the horn if a child is left behind despite the driver doing ther child check), charter mode, Theft-Mate maintenance mode, or the motion sensor simply does not work. If any of those are the case, I grab the key for each vehicle needing a horn check and check it manually, both with the CCM system activated and with the motion sensor afterwards. The reason for this is because the key fob has a pretty good range and consequently, whenever I press it, other buses parked within range will have their Double Check/Theft-Mate temporarily deactivated for 10 minutes (additionally, some drivers still use charter mode when they park despite the new policy). Out of every bus I checked today, only one had a defective motion sensor (confirmed with diagnostic mode and me waving my hand in front of it, the light never lit up either) and it was reported.
As a horn cop, I must say I enjoy doing these checks because it helps make sure the motion sensors and horns are working properly and that they will go off in the event of a real emergency. More specifically, in the event a child really is left behind. In that case, it's better that the horn sounds than not, which is why drivers are trained not to use charter mode when parking and leaving the bus unattended.
