A six-year-old Chinese-American boy is being called a piano prodigy, after beating out thousands of applicants from around the world in a prestigious musical competition this year. Winning the prize got him to New York's famed Carnegie Hall where he was among the youngest to perform. CGTN's Karina Huber reports.

@@lehallway9773 Yes, you are right. “Smoke cannot exist without fire, and stereotypes cannot exist without truth”. The thing is, in today’s society, these assumptions come from people who make erroneous fundamental attributed observations of these people and come to a conclusion about their personal lives, personalities, traits, et cetera. And like in this case, there is the assumption (derived from some truth) that Asian kids are good at everything because they a forced to do it. But we see it as a prejudicial generalisation. Wow, I expanded a bit too much… have a good day!!

Holy crap!! I remember going to band camp with this kid. I was 12, he was about 5. Every camper is wearing t shirts, shorts, sandals, etc. This kid came in a suit and tie, EVERY DAY. At a sleep away camp. And proceeded to blow us all away with his piano chops. Crowds formed around him every time he played. So happy to see him earn success and play at such a high level, at such a young age.

When I was growing up the best I got was a roof over my head which was a trailer. When it came to food I got lot of mac&cheese , fish sticks mostly cause that's all mom could afford. My dad was a truck driver so he was on the road most of the time. He took most of the money with him so he could eat steak and stuff like that. But when he came home he wanted steak to eat. Now here is the kicker he never left mom enough money for mom to buy things like that. The best memory I had with dad was when I was a teenager. He took me on the road with him on the semi-truck couple times. That's really the only thing I got cause like 10 years later he passed away from cancer.

@@jonathandaddario5386 Actually, it should inspire and encourage anyone to magnify the talents that they have or can acquire. This applies to those that play the piano and those that don't. It applies to any field, music or otherwise. If you have children encourage them in familiar or unfamiliar skills. Be patient with them, encourage them to hard work. If one idea doesn't work, that's okay, try another! Don't give up. Do things in balance. There is a little bit of genius in all of us! Passion and endurance can bring that out in everyone! Remember the important role the parents played in this child's life!

@@MoogieB oh by all means his playing is incredible and he definitely is special and different. i was considered a child prodigy because i could pick up on melodies with my right hand on piano at 7. i was doing this with songs like rudolph the red nosed reindeer, mary had a little lamb, and this old man basically nursery rhymes and christmas songs id heard. what he is doing here is light years ahead of my ability even as a teenager. i wasnt proficient in songs like this until my mid teens. the ability to read music is becoming obsolete as we dont need it to remember songs anymore. if not written down in the past all of mozart would have been forgotten.

Interesting comment. I've been playing in that position for the last few months, because I had to put my keyboard is on a table, and I've also found that I'm playing better than usual. I hadn't thought of it, but this position might be an important key to better playing!

“He can punch the little keys” Any 2 year-old can and will randomly plonk the keys, this does make him any different. Parents pushing their kids that early ruins their opportunity to find true passion. However, he does seem to enjoy it (luckily) and all the haters saying he’s never going to have a childhood are just jealous. He’s talented, probably more than most of us were at 6 years old, so I say kudos to him.

I have to say that I am a piano teacher and I am very sad to have read that this beautiful gift of a child did not find a teacher to teach him when he was two, because I have worked with a two-year-old and I have flourished him beautifully! The time he was four years old he had already passed his twin brother and sister who were for at the time I started them and they were eight years old his skills were phenomenal! I also have worked with a three-year-old little girl who is absolutely brilliant and I actually believe that the smaller the child the greater the learning skills! I yearn to think what this amazing little boy could’ve accomplished had he found a teacher who believed they had the skills to teach him and that “he was able to start lessons and could have read music” which is exactly what I teach my small piano students to do! They do and can read music, I don’t write a note in but I actually teach them how to play real songs and read notes! Small children are absolutely amazing at that age and their learning capacity by the time they reach the age that this young man started his piano lessons are extremely accomplished little children and students! I applaud his parents for buying him a $20,000 piano bravo to you both you believe in your child and you believed in his stunning ability to love music thank you for your gift to the universe may be a blessing to the world musically I know he will bring much light to the world I applaud his parents for buying him a $20,000 piano bravo to you both you believed in your child and you believed in his stunning ability to love music thank you for your gift to the universe may be a blessing to the world musically I know he will bring much light to the world!i have always started young children in my entire career and still do for I believe that they have such an incredible capacity for learning at a very young age they’re minds are so clear and they see everything very absolute! Continued success little man!

Nathaniel Zhan Hi Nathaniel I have been a piano teacher for the past near 50 years and my specialty is starting small children and I will tell you that they are amazing the matter what age they are for they have a gift for learning and they are pure and everything they do is beyond excellent! I’m currently teaching quite a few smaller children... I have a three-year-old I have two 4-year-old boys, several 5 years old. But my little three-year-old is a girl and she is absolutely priceless, so I’m not bragging but I am telling you the experiences that I have teaching smaller children has been incredibly rewarding and they learn so well! I don’t know if you have ever studied music but I will tell you what I love teaching and seeing the young mind develop and I have many clients in my home with my youngest student of three and my oldest is 76 years old!! I have a wide range of ages in all of my clients... therefore I love my work regardless of age and I see that I was blessed to do what I do! Teaching people how to learn no matter what age is a gift and I cherish the gift that I was given to pass on to other students no matter what age they are! I hope this encourages you to know that learning at any age is a gift and one who processes to gift of teaching is also a blessing because for me teaching is an art...it encompasses the whole human being of teacher and student connection!
