Child trafficking in Afghanistan | DW Documentary

Poverty is rampant in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. So much so that ever more Afghan parents have little choice but to sell own children: be it to childless couples, as brides or even to radical Islamist groups, who indoctrinate them as fighters.
Most of the affected children come from internally displaced families: forced to flee from the Taliban or because they could no longer make a living in their home regions. For the affected children, such a situation is unimaginably cruel - But parents also struggle with giving up their sons and daughters. Oftentimes the money doesn’t last, and they stay trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty. A report by Fariba Sahraei and Marc Erath.

There is an active trade of rich, old A. ra-bik men "marrying" underage girls, between ages 9-16, for 1-2 nights and then divorcing them and going back to their anything between 1-4 wives + concubines. This is rampant across the MENA region, as well as in South Asia. I don't expect the DW to show it and before you are outraged, let me tell you that such "marriages" and "divorces" are perfectly legal for the religion & a priest oversees the ceremonies.

The problem with Afghanistan is the culture. The fundamentalism means that people are unwilling to change. Women are cut off from participating in society apart from subservience. The rulers are tyrants who have no idea about governance . No one is willing to invest or work with them. The chance for a positive cultural change will only come from the bottom up and no outside force can impose that upon an unwilling population. Unfortunately this means so much more suffering for many more generations until the zealots are slowly cut out and replaced by a slow and steady reform.

@@Native_soul321 absolutely No, i am an indian and i live in a village far away from city, and i make 8000 USD approx 6lakh indian rupees per annum and almost the poorest in my village earns a daily wage of Rs 400-Rs 500 from manual works (7 dollars a day) per capita. Also the situation i am telling about jharkhand (the third poorest state in india). In few states daily wage earnerss make upto 1000 (12-13)USD a day which is 40 USD as per PPP, so you cant compare the situation of Afghanistan with India. India is aspiring and growing well unlike pakistan or nepal or afg. Coming to foreigners , the people whom i am in contact, all wanted to visit India twice or even thrice. yes we have problems but those will be overcomed and we are overcoming. like i will consider me as an example, i came from a family where no one is graduated and my elder brother was the first to hold the degree and then me and now the generations are well educated. 8 years back , my family income of 4 people was Rs120000 (then 2400 USD)per annum. Now its about 13-15 lakh =20000 USD approx. we are growing , so i believe the country is growing. we are very hopeful and aspiring to get back the lost glory

Even if international aid were to go back to the country, this would not end people's misery there. This didn’t happen during taliban - it happened 20 years ago when Hamid Karzai and Ashraf Ghani created 4000 Wahabi schools in training taliban secretly around Afghanistan and inside Afghanistan jail - and they called them brothers or their Pashtun clan - this was political game of super powers to place two nomads in seats and take out resources under their name as these rep crooks were paid Millions… their gang of regimes were chooses by outsider and placed under “identity of educated “… none did the work in the parliament or presidential palace .. Afghanistan was and is in control of outsiders .. the last 20 years made few chosen people millionaires, but threw under the bus . &0 percent of my relatives escaped in the last 20 years , these are Tajiks …..,Tajiks and Hazara and patriotic Pashtuns have been murdered by these chosen Pashtuns of Afghanistan and Pakistan … Afghanistan persian community is rapidly erased and replaced my Pashtun ( 20 years and ongoing )…. Hazara are killed … ethnic cleansing in 20 years and ongoing is extreme . … 5 million people became drug affects in the last 20 gears - drugs were sold in university and today majority are addicts that started 20 years …… what happened to Afghanistan wasn’t done over night , it was pre planned and done in 20 years and ongoing .,.. today persian and Hazara communities are occupied by Pashtun under Taliban / Ghani / Karzai people …. And the persian ( Tajik ) and Hazara are killed , their land stolen … people are forced to abide by Pashtun ( Taliban ) rule of extremism and speak their ethnic language of pashtu …,, everyone who’s main language ( like English ) was Farsi , but this changed in the last 20 years ….

I agree that we should’ve stayed out, but it cannot be denied that woman had access to education, jobs, etc.. (more aid/food programs too) before the Taliban.

Selling their own children? I can only imagine the sorrow a father feels, let alone the mother. It's heartbreaking. What hurts most is that no family planning is allowed, not even natural methods(without pills or injections). Women MUST bear as many children as possible, up to more than 10, even if they can't afford to feed them. What a punishment! I got no problem with anyone's religious beliefs, but I sometimes feel like it's a burden to others, especially the poor and vulnerable. Religion plays a big role in our lives, sometimes it just ruins lives and livelihoods. I refuse to believe that God(Allah) is happy seeing His people suffer to the extent of selling their children & still live in extreme poverty even after such an agonizing act.

What the documentary doesn’t mention is the poverty has been made 10x worse by the US freezing Afghanistan’s assets in their banks abroad and the international world not recognising the Afghan government. At the end, it is the normal civilians who are hit by those measures and suffer, not the Taliban who have resources to overcome those obstacles.
