Dissect unpacks the meaning behind Childish Gambino's 3005 music video. Far from a simple love song, 3005 expresses Gambino's existential loneliness on display throughout the world of Because The Internet. Through the video's use of a few key symbols (a decaying teddy bear, ferris wheel) and a unique looping structure, Donald Glover questions our so-called solutions to the existential threats of the world. Finally, we compare 3005 and This Is America, and how Glover uses the same visual technique to convey a similar overall message.
This video is a part of the Dissect Podcast's 13 episode season analyzing the music, lyrics, and meaning of Because The Internet by Childish Gambino. Listen on Spotify (spoti.fi/3jPWuWI) or wherever you get your podcasts.
Written by Cole Cuchna & Camden Ostrander. Video Editing by Jake Zeeman. Score by Justice Der.

Nothing about "This is America" is obvious, a mainstream narrative was formed about it that Donald refused to confirm. People saw what they wanted to see, you don't know what the song's actually about.

@@alexishill799 i dont think gambino talks about relationships being the solution necessarily, in fact the chorus doesnt necessarily have to be a partner, its just someone or something that makes you not feel alone (could be religion, friends, loved one, family, etc), but ends sadly with the realization that 3005 is something no one will live to, eventually one of us will die leaving the other one alone. 3005 is more of a questioning track of what does existence mean, i am scared, just need something to get through this loneliness and scaredness, but it doesnt glorify relationships as some sort of magic solution to personal pain. In fact, gambino even references committing suicide like Cobain, and Kurt Cobain had a daughter and wife who he said to love very much in his suicide note, but even that was not enough to cure his loneliness and confusion. This song is actually quite sad at the end of it but then ends with another 3005 hook to make listeners forget about the dark message of Gambino addressing suicide and loneliness.

I was taught that getting into a relationship is to add to your life, not become your life. You must be content with yourself and life before committing to someone. It can be very hard to accomplish and at times people may see you as selfish, when in reality you're just acting upon a "self-first" mentality.

I always hated that sentiment. There's never going to be a point where you are like "I'm perfect. Now i search for companionship" They go hand in hand. Other people can make you a better person. Thinking you have to fix yourself without any help before interacting with others is exactly the opposite of what you should do. Meet as many people as you can and have as many experiences as possible.

Me and my ex got together because of BTI, specifically this song. Throughout our three years 3005 was a recurring thing, telling eachother we’d be there for eachother till 3005. Eventually we broke up, I simped over her and tried to get her back, asked for another chance because I didn’t want to be alone, it’s my biggest fear more than dying. But recently I’ve remembered that before I met her I loved myself, I was happy being my own person. Being with her I loved her and prioritized her and forgot to love myself. I don’t have any bad feelings towards her and I’m forever thankful for her. But now I love myself again and I’ve moved on. Donald, BTI, 3005 & her will always be one of my biggest life lesson.

Love and relationships are so fucking hard. Its almost impossible to grow and work on yourself and I think the majority of people go thru what you did (forgetting to love yourself) and never even realize it. I just got out of a relationship and can't even imagine going into another one for a long time, I lost so much of myself focusing on my partner and I don't know how long it will take to get that back, but I feel so much happier and stable now. I'm glad you were able to relearn loving yourself, such a good place to be.

I’m so glad that Dissect is branching to KZbin! I was introduced by a random Uber driver about a year ago and I’ve been hooked ever since! The amount of detail and depth has always been mind blowing and now that it’s branching to short visual essays where the audience could increase makes me both excited to watch but also happy that more people will discover it too. Thank you for all your hard work, Cole! 🙌🏿

There is also another deeper story line to it. As everyone ages in this video, he doesn’t. The world he created was overcome by aliens. This is shown in the other series of videos that came out. Gambiano put so much into this album and that’s why it will remain my favorite piece of art.

The bear in the video could also be a sort of commentary about the novelty of his lifestyle, like that it’s nice having all these things and these girls, but eventually that feeling loses all meaning. Also, I read Catcher in the Rye last year, and I freaked out when I saw the line about clapping for the wrong reasons. Good times

Theres one last scene at the very end of 3005's music video (the part where a segment of Vealots of Stockholm plays) where you can see a figure standing in the street with the lights flashing. This might allude to the Alien Invasion theory in some of Gambino's music videos but Im not that sure tho.
