Exactly! We watched this video in my history class and my teacher was explaining just that. America is using the internet and all these new dances and things as a DISTRACTION. And it is definitely working. Some people don’t even realize the real meaning.

The choir shooting was referring to the Charleston church shooting done by Dylann Roof, a white man. So I doubt its supposed to be about black people killing other black people. The guns are also handled with care in a cloth, while the bodies are dragged away or left, showing how guns are prioritized over lives. SZA (at the end) said she’s supposed to be the Statue of Liberty watching all the chaos passively. The white horse with the man in black is supposed to represent death. Also the kids seem to be blindly following and copying him, but they’re also the ones to take care of and deal with the mess he’s left like taking and giving him the guns. The pose he does at the begging when he shoots the man in the chair is a Jim Crow pose, a racist caricature done by white men in blackface. I think he was saying get your money black man because black people are told to ignore the issues and just get your money. At the end, he seems to be running away from an all white crowd so i dont know if that was purposeful but i noticed they all looked white.

The dancing emulates Jim Crow... He blends African tribal dance with that of modern hip hop. Dancing throughout is unnatural.. it is symbolic of the push /pull of the artist Gambino being a slave to modern society in which the mindset is to "Get yo Money Black Man". The color Maroon is symbolic to the group of slaves that escaped and blended into the indigenous Americas, but have they truly been freed? It is highlighted in the chair the guitarist is sitting on.. the rag to hide the gun, sashes on the choirs singers and across the background wall. The shooting references the Charleston shooting in which just like Gambino depicts, the shooter enters the church... seemingly interested in the message... and then shoots. Gambino is the leader that is used to entertain you, distract you, influence your mainframe away from the truth, the chaos. Children in the uniforms are his followers, going along with and mimicking his every move. They're caught up in dance, social media, AND other tools to distract you. There's a car burning indicating a fire - the second sign in the Bible referencing near End times. Thus Death comes riding by in the Pale White Horse. But who cares right? GET YOUR MONEY BLACK MAN...focus is on money, cars, girls hence the ending of the song. But it all catches up...Gambino runs trying to escape from the brutal reality he didn't recognize or didn't care to. I'm sure there's more symbolism and referencing. Gambino = GENIUS

The video "This is America" shook me. It can be interpreted in many ways. Just depending on your personal mind set. For me it's made me really emotional. Literally crying silent tears right now. I do not like when people are being treated differently.. period... It's truly up to us and the younger generations to change the way others act towards racial violence & the treatment of others. In the end I agree with what Taylor said. People see what they want to see. We get distracted very easily. Which is not an excuse.

he is trying to say america is always distracted .. thats why the kids are their dancing ..everybody in america is to busy dancing and partying but they dont pay attention to the background of everything happening around them like in the video the kids are clearly non stop dancing while chaos is going around behind them and this is truly how america is the symbolism is crazy everyone is to busy trying to get lit and party and dance right after tragedys happen listen to his lyrics in the beginning he says " we just tryna party" ....thats how america is everyone is to busy trying to have fun and party ...thats why america will never be great bc evryone is blind to the truth and distracted and at the end he pull out a joint and smokes it and he literally is just reffering to how america acts upon things we just try to numb the pain and get high to forget about these things .. and also at the end the city is abondoned almost looks like it fell apart he is truly trying to show us something with the symbolism and only few can understand it..

Dancing represents the media. Shit happens and were mad for a little and it's back to the same stuff,that's why he kills and goes back to dancing. The rioting isn't police brutality,it's ment to show the craziness in America and the media just passing by it. We're distracted and are controlled by the media.whatever they say,believe and do people believe them. Just like guns. The media shows them in bad situations and never touch on good ones. The dancing is a metaphor

I don't think so. Black people already know everything that's in this video. Every single reaction I've seen from Black viewers, they get it right away. This is more like a picture of how he sees his place in American culture - he's just looking around and seeing that the music and dance and drama he does so well are being used to wash over the insane environment we live in, and covering up the chaos and suffering that ironically generated the art.

I noticed having seen many reactions to this video, those reacting from a country other than America seem to get the message way faster and don't get distracted by the background as much, perhaps it's easier to see the battle when you aren't in the trench, perhaps we are less desensitized to mass shootings. It's upsetting to see how many are initially shocked by the shootings in America, like in real life, and are smiling and bouncing to the music a few seconds later, like in real life. Glover helped pull back the curtain on the real America by revealing that he and his industry are in fact that curtain; it's really important to see the foreground, but always pay more attention to the background. Glover really has created a gem here, that sadly, has aged very well.

The verse "Hundred bands, hundred bands, hundred bands, Contraband, contraband, contraband" while the children were dancing around him, I believe is a reference to todays music and our children. "Hundred bands, hundred bands, hundred bands, Contraband, contraband, contraband" References Lil Pumps Gucci Gang, as well as that genre of music. He and other "rappers/artists" (I use those terms very loosely) put out a bunch of mindless, repetitive, meaningless "music", glamorising, glorifying, and infecting our youths. Musically lobotomising them, selling them a false image, making them belive in a pipe dream, and pushing them to go live (or at least try to live) that lifestyle that they (the "rappers") themselves did not. Only for it to end in the death and destruction of our youth, who are our future. They don't care though, as long as they're getting paid.

The old cars, the old clothes, we're still living in the past, still making the same mistakes, just in new ways. We let the people in charge distract us and let the circle of Violence continue over and over, this isn't a race thing, if people worked that out and knew its only about social class and money people at the top would lose their power. They want Blacks and Whites (racism)to fight, they want Men and Women to fight (Feminism) so they can hide the only way to unlock our struggle which is the Rich Vs the Poor. Get your money black man is an Ironic statement, he is saying you value money above life. Also he is saying it while dancing on top of the past, Which is symbolizing he in control your past and your future.
@austinb.9681
@austinb.9681 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Jones what “leaders” are doing that, this reaction just goes to show that racism is still around, not just because of politicians, but because of some people like you just watched. Go back to the reference to the Charleston shooting part, notice that they laugh. And the citizens do not care enough to actually realize critical issues. Then those stupid fucks wanna bring up that they were a part of the African slave culture, when they’ve never experienced something like that, they have no right to speak about it. (Dumbed down): Black on Black crime is simply not portrayed as racist, and it’s ignored. Then other races pop into the storyline, it becomes a huge ordeal. So if you think that for a second, race should never be a factor to crime like this. You have a very small mindset, and if you think racism can end with people like this on the earth, you’re surely wrong.

A message of the video is that the guns handled so carefully more so than the human being. Guns are treated more important. The moves and faces he does in the beginning are of Jim Crowe an actor in the 50-60s who used to dress up as black face and portray what he thought were actions of black people. The horse in the background was “Death” riding around (1 of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse) Sza was lady liberty, the dancing is the media distracting from the real issues and chaos that goes on in the world. Black culture is often celebrated when we can entertain but black culture and lives are not cared for as much when there are killings, police brutality, etc. Just a few things I got from the video. Have watched in at least 20 times and will keep watching

Also when the White horse (Death) ran by.. The reason he was still and quiet as everyone ran what's because everybody died, including him, stuck in the last pose he was in... Which is why you hear the screaming in the background and the shooting.. When he quietly pulled out the blunt (called a Whiteboy back in the days), it was actually his soul leaving his body, which is why when he walk to the car, the dead person who was shot was still playing the guitar, the chaos in the back stop, and his soul continue to dance.. The woman on the car was actually mortal, she was the queen of life (she births the living) its why her hair flowed, and the top of her hair was formed as a crown .. because she can see life and death, AKA spirits.. Also most of the things you see is tooken from africa.. the uniforms, the dancing, the kids, the music in the beginning.. Because Africans govenment is going through the same thing we are going through.. Theres a LOT of messages in this video you cant see.. And if you're not up to date with whats going on in America AND Africa.. then theres alot of things you'll miss.. P.S. Anyone notice the White Chicken looking 1 way and Brown chicken looking the other?? The White guy getting thrown over the balcony? The people with cells on their hand recording, but didn't say anything because their mouth was covered my a white rag? The way the guns was handled? That's how you know this video also connect with Africa... when you see the part where he shoots up the church (which happened in america) the he used was a AK-47.. which is majority used... In Africaaaa... hints why he said " this is Guerrilla War"..

The girl in the yellow really put it in a new perspective.. she’s very smart I like her :) and I’ll add that I’ve watched at least 20 of these reactions and this is the one that made the most sense.. and the reactions I watched were from all different perspectives

KEVINKEV PFF there's more. The celebrities represented Jim Crow. You saw the kids that were dancing were doing exactly what Childish Gambino was doing. Celebs were distractions. That's why Sza was there. Also notice after shoots a black person he carefully puts the gun in a "cloth" putting much care into the gun, showing the gun is more delicate than the people who got shot.

These black young people should be given props for there quiet observance of the events and then coming up with a somewhat logical conclusion of the events they witnessed. You young black young adults make me proud by showing intelligence as well as calmness in there evaluation of the video. Too many times our black youths a mired in vulgarity and ignorant verbiage. These young people here are truly what our youths should immulate.

This was a very powerful video in an attempt to make Americans more aware of what's happening to black people. Guns are valued more than human lives, the sack over the guy's head is essentially a nobody to people, the dancing distracting you, the choir shot reminiscent to dylann roof killing those church members, the white horse etc.

The girl on the right I think she noticed the suicide by the one guy and I have watched like 30 reactions to it so far and she is the only that has noticed it the first go around. I didnt noticed till later even myself. Im my opinion, it represents that no one notices the suicide until its to late. Deep shit.
