Mark 12: 38 - 44
"All In"
Throughout the Bible there are many stories and teachings about widows and orphans. They represented those most in need of care, support, love, and justice in the community. Here in the twelfth chapter of Mark’s gospel, we find Jesus warning his followers about wealthy scribes who put on pious facades while they simultaneously “devour widows’ houses.” He then calls the disciples’ attention to a poor widow who has contributed her last two coins to the temple treasury and he makes the case that she has given more than others who have given out of their abundance. Taken together, these teachings encourage us to consider how we can learn from the widow’s faith and generosity (and from the scribe's missteps) to go “all in” for justice and to care for those who are in need. There are a lot of needs and a lot of ways to serve. What is your way?
Our Bay Shore Bells will be playing three octaves of Schulmerich bells and chimes during our worship service this Sunday. Our early prelude will begin with Jason McNally on the organ, then our bell choir will play Aria, by Michael Helmen where you’ll experience memorable, lyrical melodies and the meditative quality of this original composition. Later in the service our bell choir will play the familiar Simple Gifts based on a traditional Shaker tune and arranged by Kevin McChesney. Our Chancel Choir will be singing the lovely God Be in My Head by John Rutter, as well as The Heavens are Telling from The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn. We’ll feature Shannon Miller, Jake Asaro and Michael Rice on this choral standard, proclaiming the wonder of God’s creation. Come this Sunday to be inspired by a variety of instruments and musical styles, all to the glory of God.
