The blunt truth is that mediocrity clicks with the masses and because the internet has democratised access to mediocrity, it outsells quality performances which need education and/or skill or at least being informed to some extent to fully enjoy. It's not even about acquired tastes or complex things like appreciating say a pianist or a violinist. Even Mohd Rafi's or Manna Dey's songs won't be popular today because they are not about mediocre topics. The mass market too has devolved into materialist, consumerist bottom feeding. So in the end, the audience says to the skilled singer: "Isme tera ghaata ..."
