I love how Apple gets you all worked up by that word. I'm English, and saying "you cheeky bugger" is colloquially like saying "you silly goose" but with a slightly more risqué connotation. Like other swearwords, you can say it as a figurative substitute and not actually be referencing the word meaning. If I told you that sideburns are known as "bugger handles", however, you can tell from context that I'm very much using the literal definition...

From what I understand, it's the difference between using it as a noun or as a verb. As a noun, a (cheeky) bugger is someone silly or rude. As a verb... well, you know.

@TaricOfLegend Probably not far off it, in context. I don't think I've tended to hear "cheeky bugger" all that much out of a more whimsical, playful or tongue-in-cheek situation. "Cheeky bastard" is definitely more common as a negative, but even then the "cheeky" part is more likely to be substituted for another word if it's particularly negative - it's probably somewhere along the lines of "you're taking the p-ss".

As an Australian who has inherited the word. Buggered means tired (from some much/had enough), It's also used as an equivalent to F* word. It's also been used in a well known, loved and banned (at least temporarily) Toyota Hilux ad.

My favourite Chilled moment ever is now the guessing game round with Courtilly and one question about social anxiety. Up until her protesting that he has social anxiety too. It is such a warm siblingy scuffling. The way you can tease people you are close to if you trust that they trust you not to genuinely hurt their feelings.
