Appreciate this one even more this year and picked up some more tips from it - made a few mistakes last time round, mainly with watering during germination so this'll be a big help. I find it's good to watch these seed to sauce vids each year even though I've been growing chillies a while - helps refresh the memory and achieve better rates. Will be growing more cayenne this year - used loads in 2022 to make lots of that awesome Sambal you've recipes for. (Seed to Sambal, anyone?)

I've been growing tomatoes for a few years, though just last year I tried also growing some chilies. Honestly I think chilies are way more worth it to grow yourself, the amount of fruit you get is basically the same but the value you get from one chili pod is way more than 1 tomato. I'll only be growing chilies this year, actually. I have some overwintered jalapenos, habaneros, habanadas, chiltepins and right now I'm also germinating some aji limon and chilehuacle negro seeds. Honestly the highlight of the year for me, getting to grow your own chilies.

Just got my Aji dulce seeds from you!! Don’t have a heat mat or fine vermiculite, so my 1st packet of seeds will be an experiment. I live in AZ and we are getting rain tonight and tomorrow!! Dsnt happen very often so I planted my first pack on top of seed starter pods and layered 1/4” with sand and perlite. It might be totally wrong but it’s what I have today & I really wanted to take advantage of the rain. Tomorrow, I will go to Lowe’s to get the mat & vermiculite for the 2nd round of the pepper experiment. Really appreciate all the extra work u put in for us trying to grow peppers successfully for the first time. I make something called “sofrito” and have yet to see aji dulce peppers in ANY Asian or Latin market anywhere in the US( except Miami), so I’m super excited for these little guys to grow and give me lots of peppers. @@ChilliChump I’m in the south now, near London. Rainbow chilli, Zimbabwe black chilli, cherry kiss, and Hungarian Wax pepper. I got them from a seed shop so not sure how old they are, so far the cherry kiss and Hungarian wax have germinated and I knew I was starting at the wrong time but I’ve not developed the bonsai patience yet so sowed a few each of what I have to try inside and will try them again at the proper time of year if they don’t take. Currently inside in a heated propigator and then have one of those plastic greenhouses indoors by a big window. Not idea but seems to be working well with some garden centre chilli plants, developing nicely but plain old garden variety so thought I’d try with something more exotic looking!

Wrap them inside a wet paper towel for a few days? Or I can just plant them straight from the chilies itself? I live in Indonesia so the temperature and humidity is perfect here. My question is, when you brew the tea, do you use rain water or tap water. And I'm sure this method can be used for many other seeds. It's a great way to help the seeds get going and I'm able to pass that information onto our people in the remote areas of Malawi. Thank you 😊

Hi Shaun, I’m not sure if I agree with you when to switch on the lighting. I put mine on as soon as I see several seeds have germinated. I find if I was to do it when the first true leaves have formed the seedlings would be very leggy and spindly. I known you can prick them out and transplant deeper. If the lights are on straight away the seedlings are stocky and look stronger. Stefan

Thanks for your step by step instructions. It is reassuring to see I did it almost the same. Almost.... I use a low nutrient soil to germinate, so that the plants put their power into root growth to try and get at the nutrients. I would have thought that kompost is to nutrient rich for the start. Am I right or am I wrong?

I've never had an issue with root growth at seedling stage. Just make sure you use plain compost...no additives

You can use campden tablets (Potassium Metabisulfite) to get rid of chloramine in the water. Very small amount is needed. I do that for brewing beer.

Beautiful job! But as you well know, everyone’s growing situation is different, and mine is nuts. I live in South Florida, Zone 10, with months of extreme heat (good for peppers), and months of torrential afternoon rainfalls (bad for peppers). All of my peppers are in containers outdoors, because the soil stinks here, easier pest control, and I can better control soil moisture and feeding (especially during the dry times). All of my mature plants are doing okay, but my problem is seed starting: I don’t have space indoors to properly set up a seedling station, and my outdoor area is far from ideal because of the excess heat and rainfall, even though I do what I can to mitigate the water by covering the trays with a transparent lid and keeping them under other cover. Not ideal, doesn’t work, so… I just bought three small hydroponic units solely to germinate indoors and grow to pee wee size, 10 pods each. They go with the furniture, so my wife “let” me buy them! Are pepper seeds “friendly” to this kind of germination? I read somewhere possibly not, but I’m going to give it a shot anyway because I don’t have any choice. I just “planted” two of the units yesterday.

The first two leafs are very apparent, and I'm starting to see some character leafs emerging... Should I replant them? Thank you very much for your help! ❤️🌶️❤️

This year i will try to grow black pearl, chilhuacle negro and some thai super chili seeds i got for free. Ive only grown some regular cayenne before. Im just worrying a bit because i recently moved and my windows doesnt have optimal sunlight conditions. I will likely move them back and forth trough the apartment and put them where the sun shines. It will be interesting to see what will happen. What is that brown liquid in the bottle? Its tea? You forgot to mention it i think? /Thanks from Sweden

love your vids so informative, been growing chillis from seeds for 2 years now, did a trial last year with a cherry bomb in the autopot system and I couldn't harvest the chillis fast enough, just prolific in that system, one problem iv had over the last couple of years is helmet head, a Naga and 2 piri piris this year it has happened to, will your methods on soaking seeds reduce this problem ?
@ChilliChump
@ChilliChump 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will help with that....however, you still need to maintain a good amount of humidity over your seedlings while they germinate to help with this. I have had maybe 6 seedlings with that issue this year, out of a good few hundred.

Hi Shaun, thank you for your video! This is my first year growing from seed (or trying, shall I say!) I wonder if you could answer two quick questions... 1) what are the soaking times when using the H2O2 method? 2) I bought seeds online (from a local and reputable farm) so I don't know how old the seeds are. Do you have any advice for how long I should soak them, eg is too much soaking dangerous ? Thank you! I'm a big fan of your channel!

With H202, 30 to 60 minutes should be fine for most seeds. Up to 6 hours max I would say. For your seeds, if they are from a reputable seller they should be from last season, at worst the season before. So follow my guidelines I show in the video. Max 24 hours soak

Hey Shaun. You've been a huge inspiration to me to get pepper plants in my garden I have 6 varieties but all bought as either seedlings or plugs. I'm interested in growing plants from the seeds that I've collected from the peppers in my garden but I don't know when to start the planting process. Just about everyone on KZbin talks about "weeks before last frost date". In Cape Town however we don't have a frost date as it doesn't snow out here. What does that translate to for sowing date? Does that mean I can sow any time of the year or is there still a preferred starting time of the year?
