A recent chimney rebuild I did for a mate, the owner of a very successful roofing company FJS - Andy Johnson. The stack was very unstable but has now been rebuilt using new bricks but still incorporating all the original detail. (Please see 'Before and After' pic at the end of video.)

I rebuilt mine and a bricky told me the teathered out bricks are to stop water running off the cap down the stack and getting in behind the lead it allows the rain to drip onto roof and lead

Yes, apart from being a nice decorative feature, it does do what you say. Plus, straight chimneys don't really look much. Yes, frogged bricks (stocks) are still around. A lot nicer to lay than the semi-engineering bricks with the holes.

Links in with the back gutter tray and also prevents damp penetrating downwards into the building. Some chimneys would also have a lower one 225 above the roof line at the front. Most old ones had nothing 😱
