Heartache and tears since Sept 27…Hendersonville, Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure were always a sanctuary of fall enjoyment, rejuvenation, and wonder….This needs to be seen by as many as possible as News Networks are not as focused on this tragedy as they should be. Prayers and deepest condolences to everyone in the area who lost family, homes, livelihoods, and peace of mind. I have donated to Samaritan’s Purse and will continue. @shadyendeavor2 ай бұрын
I think most of them were just unearthed. The river that was there before is no longer. It's much wider in parts and cuts straight through parts that were just dirt before. Though, of course, the water has now receded. And you can see by the way Lake Lure looks now, all of the dirt and soot ended up there. And some boulders may have come from the massive slides from higher up the mountains. Mark Huneycutt has a great video where he hikes way up to the top of the slide that went all the way down to just west of the Esmeralda Inn.

I live in Lenoir, about a half hours drive south of Blowing Rock. I drive 321 North quite often through Boone to visit family, go to the parkway or drive through to hangout in Valle Crucis. The night Helene hit I had considered going up the mountain just hours earlier and I'm glad I didn't. There were 3 spots between Blowing Rock and Boone on 321 that had mudslides across the road and that wasn't even the most hard hit areas. There are towns where all the shops and houses on one side of the road or another are just gone... We had several 70-to-100 year old white oak trees down on our property and were without power for several hours. We were lucky, as we don't live in a flood plain. You couldn't pay me to live in a flood plain. So many people in the harder hit areas lost everything and still need help, and lots of others lost their lives. People are still missing, bodies are still being pulled from the river. The Biden administrations response to this disaster was despicable... Sending millions... even billions to other countries around the world but won't help OUR PEOPLE FIRST. FEMA helped, to a point, but they have a reputation for being crooked by pocketing donations for "future disasters" and making a dollar in the process. It's sickening. The real heroes are the first responders, the national guardsmen, and our locals who have helped immensely in the recovery efforts.

At 0.52 is the Mitchell house on the hill painted red in Bat Cave on hwy 9, 1 mile before the Buncombe/Henderson County line. It was their vacation home in the mid 60s-70s, when I was a kid growing up in the house on the hill beside it 65-70s. Age 5-10. My "ole timey" babysitter at that time was Anniebell Hudgins. She lived in a tar paper shack. I loved her so much...She's been gone many years. She didn't bathe. The state put a bathroom in her shack and she wouldnt use it. My grandmother Harrill Hwy would make her take a bath at our house on Saturday night's! A LOT of searching and tweaking. The before images are mostly all from Street View maps available online. So it's a lot of work, first, finding the specific location (of which I'm not a local at all, so I sure don't know the area). Second, moving to the specific spot that I can get the best angle. And third, zooming in and rotating to match the after image orientation as close as possible. I don't live there and not being able to be there to help out, I want to be sure to give as much accuracy to this devastation so people can really know how absolutely beautiful these areas were and how much was lost.
