Chimps at Higashiyama Zoo, 1) Mother Kazumi & her son Riki 2) Raleigh & Riki

Riki is actually very protective of his momma. There is a difficult video to watch of Riki defending and protecting his mother from an attack by several other troop members. She was really really really getting hurt and there was a very young Riki doing EVERYTHING he could to protect his mother. He was stomping on backs and slapping older bigger chimps with all of his strength to protect his mom. As we all know chimpanzees are insanely strong so just imagine a large group of them literally attacking your mother at once. Riki jumped right in the middle of the attack with no hesitation. They obviously have a very strong bond. I also remember Jane Goodall stating in a documentary that some chimpanzee mothers will allow their children to ride on their backs up to 4-5 years old and some possibly even longer if their mothers let them get away with it. If you don’t know who Jane Goodall is look her up. She spent a lifetime researching chimpanzees & is world renowned for her work. I’ll take her word on acceptable chimp behavior over some random person any day.

I'm beyond relieved to learn that Kazumi not only survived that brutal beating/mauling, but miraculously went on to have more babies.

Riki grows up to be a sweet and kind boy. Unlike the aggressive males in this zoo that are constantly going nuts on everyone in this group.

Im sure not being in a natural environment has had an effect on Riki’s development, and the rest of the group for that matter.

Hey Riki, you're like 45 years old, don't you think it might be time to get off of moms teet? And maybe try walking around by yourself too? Dude, she's already had 2 hip surgeries, she's gonna be one of those old ladies driving around Walmart on a motorized scooter, is that what you want?Who are you, Chris Elliott?!

The younger chimp has some issues. I've seen in other videos that it's not behaving appropriately within the group. It's getting to the point that the older chimps will put the smackdown on his ass and it won't be so cute especially if it happens in from of people.
