The Trials Of Life
Sir David Attenborough continues his study of animal behaviour in the third instalment of his award-winning Life series. Beginning with the ways in which animals arrive in the world and ending with the extraordinary techniques they employ to reproduce, the Trials of Life is one of the most comprehensive wildlife documentaries ever made. Taking some three and a half years to make, Attenborough travelled almost a quarter of a million miles to complete this fascinating and insightful documentary.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of astounding, entertaining, thought-provoking and educational natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

Yes, chimpanzees can be astonishingly loud. But being in the middle of an ongoing hunt can actually be extremely exciting, although I suppose whether someone finds it exciting or dismaying depends in part on whether they've approached it from the chimps' side or happen to be doing research on the monkeys and some chimps show up. The chimps themselves are extremely excited and their cortisol levels go up as their bodies prepare to mobilize energy for the pursuit -- we have data that show this -- and no doubt they are also experiencing huge adrenaline rushes. The emotion is contagious among the chimps and it spreads to humans, too; we can feel effects that I'm sure are like what they are feeling, if much milder (after all, it wouldn't be advisable for an unarmed human to try to catch a red colobus or black & white colobus, even if they were so inclined). I can attest to this personally. Along the lines of another comment, though, I can add that I have had occasional moments when, amidst the surge of excitement I feel, I am thankful that they don't know how easy it would be for them to rip me to pieces, too. (Much easier than dispatching an adult colobus, in fact, given my puny canine teeth.) BTW: this clip does not show a single sequence, of course; they spliced it together from various times/events, as typical of such "documentaries". Not all the screaming happened at the hunt (and the hunt footage wasn't all from a single event). That's not to say that hunts aren't usually rather noisy!

@@mastergee7075 Looking back at some of these comments reminds me once again that so many people are so given to confusing chimpanzees with humans and passing inappropriate moral judgements on them. It's entirely possible to feel very sorry for the monkeys (and duiker antelope) who fall victim to chimpanzees without concluding that chimpanzees are evil. They aren't. They aren't good or bad, virtuous or immoral. Those concepts apply to us, but chimpanzees aren't humans -- they are chimpanzees. I realize that others have not had what I consider the great privilege of vicariously sharing their lives (and those of mountain gorillas) in the wild like I have, and I understand why many people find it unpleasant to watch footage like this; they probably would not want to see chimpanzees hunting and eating meat in person, either. That's fine. Nor would the people who commented about the peacefulness of gorillas like to see an adult male gorilla kill an infant gorilla fathered by some other male -- behavior that happens in many primates and many other mammals -- but the fact that male gorillas sometimes commit infanticide does not make them evil.

@@davidwatts3062makes me wonder though, what about animals like crows and ravens that are known to mess with other animals for no other appearent purpose than their own enjoyment? Where do we draw the line? Is there such thing as deliberately causing another animal to suffer, in the animal kingdom? The way I see it, evil is when you cause harm or distress to another creature without that being needed for your survival. Even extreme cases like chimp "tribes" going to war with each others or baboons stealing leon cubs, it can always be traced down to self preservation. But there are exceptions, like ravens, and it's interesting to think what prompts them to act that way

Yeah, in the wild, predetors dont care if their prey is dead before the eat it, they just need it incapacitated. Humans, with some exceptions but very few, are one of the only animals on earth that make sure their food is dead before they eat it. Which is why hunting is nowhere near as cruel as its made out to be by a lot of loud people on the internet

@@benlooper5394 Predators such as large cats, dogs and alligators (more specifically carnivores) will go for the throat and kill their prey as quickly as possible before eating it (or grab it and drown it). Look at lions for instance, they will latch onto the throat until they know it's no longer breathing or dogs with violently shaking it to try and break the spinal cord. Omnivores however do not give 2 flying fucks weather you kick, bite or scratch back. They will tear you limb from limb and eat you alive as long as they come out on top.

@@luisangel5419 If chimpanzees hadn't learned how to eat meat in addition to plants, they wouldn't be the smartest apes with the biggest brains. Large amounts of proteins, fats and amino acids are necessary for complex neurological growth, and you can't get them all from merely plants. It's why purely vegetarian animals (with a few exceptions) are stupider and have smoother brains than their carnivorous counterparts. Omnivorism is indisputable scientific proof of evolution in action, which is precisely why vegans hate it; it forces them to admit that they (and their philosophical brains) are the unwilling beneficiaries of millions of years of nutritious meat-eating. Even if they wanted to, they can't undo evolution or their "human privilege", no matter how much they curse their own species and bemoan the fundamental unfairness of the world. It must be a psychologically exhausting way to live.
