China Airlines Flight 642 was a flight that crashed at Hong Kong International Airport on 22 August 1999. It was operating from Bangkok (Bangkok International Airport, now renamed Don Mueang International Airport) to Taipei with a stopover in Hong Kong.
While landing during a typhoon, it touched down hard, flipped over and caught fire. Of the 315 people on board, 312 survived and three were killed. It was the first fatal accident to occur at the new Hong Kong International airport since it opened in 1998.

I saw this crash happen in real life. We had just disembarked from our a flight from London to Sydney (via Hong Kong) moments earlier. It was really dark because the weather was fairly insane - palm trees were bent at 45 degrees. Our own plane had come in very hard and the guy next to me who had a mobile (unusual back in 99) made a local call and told us we had actually landed in a bad typhoon. As we were walking down the glass corridor to the main terminal my wife suddenly said "What's that.. is that a plane?" and I looked to the right and we both watched a long trail of fire appearing on the runway. The trail of fire grew and went on for quite a long way - I'd say 20 seconds or more before it stopped. It was hard to see the plane itself as it was so stormy and also we could not hear anything except the wind and rain, but we knew what we were watching. Very surreal. I will say the airport emergency teams were amazing... they were swarming onto the scene within what seemed like seconds not minutes. Maybe they knew there was a risk? It was an almost instant sea of blue and red lights - not just a couple of fire engines! We half expected the plane to explode and I am pretty sure that it was only because they got out there so fast that most of those people were saved from a fireball. I know many of the passengers were trapped, hanging upside down in their seatbelts for a long time - which must have been an ordeal. Having seen it, I can say it is mindblowing that so few people died. The other weird part for me was the next day... when we had to continue our flight to Aus, ...as we sat in the plane waiting to leave, the plane was still there, upside down, all burned out. Not something you want to see as you take off.
