The original look of China Airlines, the flag carrier of Taiwan. I wanted to do this video the very moment I decided to start cutting videos..but very very little footage existed online - anywhere.
After over 10 years, I have assembled a glimpse of what I saw as a young kid just learning about jets, airlines and everything commercial aviation.
I loved the US airlines that took me (and family, dad had a job with MAAG) to Taipei, but the killer was an international airport smack dab in the heart of the city! Anyone who was a kid living near or at a place where excruciatingly loud smokey jetliners came landing over your head..so low that you could hit one with a baseball. But no one did that kind of thing back then and if they had lasers, I serious doubt anyone would have done what kids do today. Anyhow, watching jets land from the US Navy's HSA Compound, that was a front row seat to jet action - that simultaneously killed 30 seconds of any movie playing in the theater even closer to the runway 10 threshold. But I had to get closer..so I'd ride the local bus every chance I got and went to Sungshan (spelling at that time) Airport and race through the terminal's rooftop terrace! And boy what a view!
The beauty of tiny single runway airports is - nothing can get away from you! Everything has to play out right before your eyes. So I watched the competing airlines come from every major Asian city. China Airlines was the home town airline and I learned a lot by watching their every move and watched them grow from their two 737-200s, three 727-100s (I'd later fly on two of them) and 3 707-320Cs expand and grow their route network. I watched the other carriers in the region fly in competing with CAL. Northwest Orient blew them all away with their once daily 747-200 from Tokyo
(Haneda) it was the 800lb gorilla in the room, it was the star of the airport. Everyday.
Cathay Pacific had more flights than anyone, almost every hour in a mix of 707s arriving from Hong Kong, Osaka, Fukuoka,Tokyo and Seoul and an equal number en route to those same cities and extra Hong Kong sections in between. Then Singapore Airlines scored their first two 747s and rotated them on the Singapore-Hong Kong-Taipei-Tokyo (Haneda) route, one each way every day...I was loving the rapid growth and it made me think...as awesome as these sights were..what was it like in Hong Kong at Kaitak? I'd leave at the end of the day with a handful of airline timetables..it did not take long to envision what was happening in Hong Kong - yes I was sleepless at the thought.
Now you all know my airline story..it led to many many awesome trips, travels, experiences and a never ending love of the Golden Age of jet travel, sorry...but you had to be in the era to know the feeling.

I flew CAL LAX-HNL-TPE in 1974 at the age of 10 to visit my dad in Taiwan, on a 707.

Wow, very cool and I was there then taking photos! And remember those flights I found a timetable of that scheduled flight back then. By ‘74 they were up to 6 707s and I think by then the LAX run was daily. SFO was first to daily. I’d kill for moving footage of a CAL 707 at LAX (plenty of photos of this) but as see in my vid, I have CAL 707 at SFO, HNL and Haneda. But in 1974 the Tokyo stops has ceased due Japan’s diplomatic recognition of Beijing govt. so your routing is correct. Glad u saw my vid.

During Kai Tak, the approach to Hong Kong was impressive and dangerous, but the pilots were aware of it, so there were very few accidents. I would like to thank you for leaving this valuable footage for posterity.

Fantastic memories of my trip to the US from Malaysia came flashing back when I watched this video. Back Dec 1987 I flew KUL-HKG-TPE with the B767-209ER. From TPE I flew to LAX onboard the B747SP-09. A few weeks later we flew to HNL with B747-200 and finally days later returned to Malaysia routing HNL-HND-TPE with the B747-200 and TPE to KUL with the B767-209ER.

Boy! What a dream trip from that age! I would have killed to experience that ride! And on the 767-200s..there was only two of those and they didn't last long in the fleet. I bet you wish you had recorded all that!

@@Starboard76 Yes I wish I had a cam corder then! The 762 and 747SP would have been priceless, especially the SP to me, considering it my first and most likely only flight on one.

Real shame that their last 742 had an ill-fated retirement. B-1866 was apparently the only passenger 742 in CAL's fleet at the time of its crash.
@Starboard76
@Starboard76 4 жыл бұрын
Good eye! Correct..B-1866, the lone 742 really had no role to play other than charters, profitable charters. The 737 A300s, A330s had the regional routes covered, the 747SPs were doing Mandarin long hauls (on CALs behalf) and the 744s were doing all the heavy lifting. And luckily enough, I have B-1866 on video, now B-18255 in the new color scheme - at TPE a few months before it's demise.

You question is indeed a good one. The original Chins Airlines fleet is quite special to me (if you read my description in the video you can see that) but knowing history of B-1864 is one I fell short with with no excuse. The first two 747s B-1860 and B-1868 (which I flew) were my favorites because they were first! If I get details of B-`1864..I will certainly contact you. You username is in Korean, so I'm curious as to your interest in China Airlines.
