great writing, sincere top notch acting, direction was superior and cinematography was excellent. It's like they made sure it WAS the best they could do, to honor all those who served there. Should have been on longer, but the "touchy" subject matter hurt it somehow, maybe US wasn't able to watch it still. I have the DVD set and admired the show so much.

Having spent 2 1/2 consecutive years on the ground in South Vietnam (1969-71 Arty), I too enjoyed "China Beach'. Though it was a series on TV there were many takeaways that were close to real. I want to thank the Nurses of the 24th EVAC...reasons of my own. I was drafted in 1968. Meat slated for the grinder in FEB 69 but.... before I left, I had some fractures that needed to heal first. I was sent to Letterman Army Hospital near San Fran. I had not yet set foot on the soil of Vietnam but I got a hard to swallow taste of the near future. I would walk through the wards...not full of the norm hospital expectations but full of the damage done to men and they were sent there for more extensive care. Legs and arms missing, devastating burn injuries and wounds that were still open but being cared for. I remember going to the Mess Hall and sitting at the table with some of the patients. One was deliriously happy. As we ate I saw he had his head bandaged and he proclaimed "I got the million dollar wound!!" Perplexed, I was young and dumb so I asked what that was. He smiled and reached up to the edge of his bandaged head and lifted the bandage from his face to show me.... an open hole where an eye use to be. He was waiting for the wound to heal and be given an eye patch and then a prosthetic eye. Maybe grim humor or relief he would never see war up close and personal again. I saw a lot of what the meat grinder could do to young men but, I also saw the Ward Nurses and those who worked with the Doctors trying to piece these guys back together so they could finally go home. I know they saw horrendous wounds and watched as their patients heal enough to continue life. Some had to be victories and ...some had lost the mental capacity to deal with having their loved ones see them as they were now. Nurses were not just caretakers of the flesh, they also had to care for the thoughts inside those torn bodies. Their visions of War were not from an in-country tour, but on the receiving end of the results of war...right here in the USA. For some, they continue in the VA Clinics and Hospitals as we speak. I know "Tour of Duty" is still on re-run tv. While I was at the "Vietnam Veterans Memorial" in DC, I ran into Troy Evans ...AKA SFC Bob Pepper..on China Beach. I think he was the only cast member to actually have served in Vietnam. He was in the 25th Infantry Division. We talked and he thought the series was very close to life. He thought Dana Delany did an excellent portrayal. I think ... maybe the new generation should be allowed to watch shows which are now deemed to be "politically incorrect" to see life as it was before. We lose so much when it is buried. Welcome home to all who served, serve now and a hand shake to those who will become a member of the 1% in the future...

Served in the 23rd Arty Group from Jan 68 to Sept 69. I thought China Beach portrayed my experiences the best of the movies and tv shows of that era. I don't know for sure on any of this but it seems to me now that the fact most of the cast was in their 30's gave it a more nuanced and mature interpretation of the events of that war. I know acting is acting, but all of the characters played their part in pulling me, yanking sometimes, into the story line of each episode. That show moved me like none before or since. Welcome home, and thanks.

Thank you for your service and the testament of how bad it was for our veterans. I remember watching this show as a kid with my dad, an army capt. and medic 173rd airborne ‘68, finished at 71st evac hospital pleiku which I’ve heard was pretty bad. He never talked too much about it. my mom told me he would have nightmares at times and that he saw some horrendous things. I was just a dumbass kid and never appreciated what he really went through, it’s amazing to think these men and women went through such horror and came home to such disrespect. All the years of the past since Vietnam and I passed since this wonderful show don’t change anything I have been to war in Vietnam. In fact, I spent a couple of chairs there, one of them incidentally at marble Mountain outside of Da Nang, where which was the site for China Beach the war never leaves the warrior and never leaves those who have seen it felt it taste it smelled it or been involved in anyway if you were a clerk typist in Vietnam, yeah very much the right for PTSD as the nurse in this particular episode, or for those of us that think that we saw more and experienced more at the time of the show, I didn’t feel that it was doing anything for me other than entertain me watching this particular episode 40 years later makes me realize how powerful it actually was. God bless those 50,000+ people who are no longer with us. God bless those people who work had serious injuries that they’ve lived with their entire life both metal and physically.

they were forgotten and not given the PTSD help they needed right away. Finally a memorial is up and their names were added to the wall. But the soldiers remember.

Remember the nurses. I'm hearing stories like this , (perhaps with less exploded limbs), from Covid doctors and nurses I know. Real tragic horrifying stuff. These people are on the frontline, whether its war , humanitarian disaster or pandemic, patching people together, sometimes in vain, sometimes successfully, but always at terrible personal cost.

The maggots eat away the dead flesh. Some doctors would put maggots under the edges of cast to ease the constant itching.

And we have a natural aversion to seeing them , their presence indicates rotting flesh and disease.

They still use them to treat certain wounds. They only eat the dead flesh away and leave fresh skin underneath alone so the wounds can heal.

You almost forget she’s a beautiful actress playing a part. Her representation of the PTSD that combat nurses experience is gut wrenching. I don’t disagree that shows like this…..as well as Saving Private Ryan, and even MASH should be required viewing for High School and College students in America. But I also think they should be mandatory viewing for anyone elected to Congress and the White House, because they need to know how there decisions, words, and actions (or inactions) have consequences.

I keep thinking there's an alternate universe Vietnam was already independent and was a neutral ally in the Cold war.
