great writing, sincere top notch acting, direction was superior and cinematography was excellent. It's like they made sure it WAS the best they could do, to honor all those who served there. Should have been on longer, but the "touchy" subject matter hurt it somehow, maybe US wasn't able to watch it still. I have the DVD set and admired the show so much.

Having spent 2 1/2 consecutive years on the ground in South Vietnam (1969-71 Arty), I too enjoyed "China Beach'. Though it was a series on TV there were many takeaways that were close to real. I want to thank the Nurses of the 24th EVAC...reasons of my own. I was drafted in 1968. Meat slated for the grinder in FEB 69 but.... before I left, I had some fractures that needed to heal first. I was sent to Letterman Army Hospital near San Fran. I had not yet set foot on the soil of Vietnam but I got a hard to swallow taste of the near future. I would walk through the wards...not full of the norm hospital expectations but full of the damage done to men and they were sent there for more extensive care. Legs and arms missing, devastating burn injuries and wounds that were still open but being cared for. I remember going to the Mess Hall and sitting at the table with some of the patients. One was deliriously happy. As we ate I saw he had his head bandaged and he proclaimed "I got the million dollar wound!!" Perplexed, I was young and dumb so I asked what that was. He smiled and reached up to the edge of his bandaged head and lifted the bandage from his face to show me.... an open hole where an eye use to be. He was waiting for the wound to heal and be given an eye patch and then a prosthetic eye. Maybe grim humor or relief he would never see war up close and personal again. I saw a lot of what the meat grinder could do to young men but, I also saw the Ward Nurses and those who worked with the Doctors trying to piece these guys back together so they could finally go home. I know they saw horrendous wounds and watched as their patients heal enough to continue life. Some had to be victories and ...some had lost the mental capacity to deal with having their loved ones see them as they were now. Nurses were not just caretakers of the flesh, they also had to care for the thoughts inside those torn bodies. Their visions of War were not from an in-country tour, but on the receiving end of the results of war...right here in the USA. For some, they continue in the VA Clinics and Hospitals as we speak. I know "Tour of Duty" is still on re-run tv. While I was at the "Vietnam Veterans Memorial" in DC, I ran into Troy Evans ...AKA SFC Bob Pepper..on China Beach. I think he was the only cast member to actually have served in Vietnam. He was in the 25th Infantry Division. We talked and he thought the series was very close to life. He thought Dana Delany did an excellent portrayal. I think ... maybe the new generation should be allowed to watch shows which are now deemed to be "politically incorrect" to see life as it was before. We lose so much when it is buried. Welcome home to all who served, serve now and a hand shake to those who will become a member of the 1% in the future...

Served in the 23rd Arty Group from Jan 68 to Sept 69. I thought China Beach portrayed my experiences the best of the movies and tv shows of that era. I don't know for sure on any of this but it seems to me now that the fact most of the cast was in their 30's gave it a more nuanced and mature interpretation of the events of that war. I know acting is acting, but all of the characters played their part in pulling me, yanking sometimes, into the story line of each episode. That show moved me like none before or since. Welcome home, and thanks.
