Stealing extra information. Negative balance doesn't matter. They see who is owned how much. Whose money pays it off (not many). And also access to ALL financial paperwork. It's not a DDos attack. Their goal was not to disrupt operations but to gather intel and data, so I would assume that they where able to by pass encrypted protocols and gain escalated privileges to steal database tables. This type of cyber attack is MUCH more sophisticated that DDoS attacks and shows that the hackers aren't amateurs. In regards to whether its Chinese hackers or not can't be confirm(at least without more investigation) , its quite easy to spool your location and/or use VMs to mask the hops and routes leading to the original IP of the hackers.
