Created during WWII, this propaganda film shows the activities of the American Volunteer Force (AVG) Flying Tigers and their P-40 Warhawks. After Pearl Harbor this group was incorporated into the new 14th Air Force, and their C.O., Claire Chennault, was put in command. This is story of the 14th Air Force in action, including P-40 gun camera footage, the epic airlift over "The Hump, and a rare look at air operations in China.
The Fourteenth Air Force (14 AF) was established by the special order of President Roosevelt on 10 March 1943. Chennault was appointed the commander and promoted to Major General. The "Flying Tigers" of 14 AF (who adopted the "Flying Tigers" designation from the AVG) conducted highly effective fighter and bomber operations along a wide front that stretched from the bend of the Yellow River and Tsinan in the north to Indochina in the south, from Chengtu and the Salween River in the west to both East and South China Seas and the island of Formosa in the east. They were also instrumental in supplying Chinese forces through the airlift of cargo across "The Hump" in the China-Burma-India theater. By the end of World War II, 14 AF had achieved air superiority over the skies of China and established a ratio of 7.7 enemy planes destroyed for every American plane lost in combat. Overall, military officials estimated that over 4,000 Japanese planes were destroyed or damaged in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. In addition, they estimated that air units in China destroyed 1,100,000 tons of shipping, 1,079 locomotives, 4,836 trucks and 580 bridges. The United States Army Air Corps credits 14 AF with the destruction of 2,315 Japanese aircraft, 356 bridges, 1,225 locomotives and 712 railroad cars.

My Grand father Edgar Gibson Capt USAAC was a munitions officer for the 14th Air Force and flew the Hump many times...he said Chennault was a tough old bird...I have several pics of him in Kunming...but I really dont know much else about his service.

I have read many first hand stories from German ww2 pilots they considered the p-40 a very dangerous adventure. Most all flew at higher altitudes than the P-40 every now and then one would dive down fire zoom threw and fly back to altitude where the p-40 didn't fly as good. But most mentioned it was to dangerous to drop down and mix it up with p-40s in there environment. It's clear they had a different attitude towards the p-40 then how history likes to explain them. Someone at some time wrote a article about how the P-40 was not as good as the german planes and every person after that wrote the same thing about this aircraft. What most historians don't know or don't mention when the army air core sent out there specs for a new modern fighter where somwere below 15 thousand feet and lower. The P-40 was exactly what they asked for and received. Wich was strange because the war in Europe was much higher flying aircraft fight. Dew to these specs the P-40 became a very good ground support aircraft. It wasn't till around the 2015s or so that I noticed historians giving this aircraft the credit it deserved. 70 years of bad reputation will probably never go away unfortunately.

Thanks so much for this edifying 3 part documentary on the Chinese/Japanese aspects of WWII. All the hype is around Pearl Harbour and the subsequent American involvement in the Pacific. However, your documentary has opened my eyes to an entirely different aspect. Those hard working Chinese and the American support are amazing.

The one thing that really helped these Early Flying Tiger pilots flying their Curries P40 Tomahawks are only with the 7.62 mm, or .308 caliber rifle cartride, then often referred to as .30 calibur, was that the Japanese stubbornly refused to equip any of their aircraft with Self Sealing fuel Tanks or Armor because the extra weight adversely affected the maneuverability and they believed maneuverability above all else was most important in a fighter. It's a mystery then why they never equipped any of the other types with armor or self sealing tanks since maneuverability wouldn't have been a consideration, but they didnt. Maybe they didn't want to sacrifice range on transports or load and range, speed, on their bombers and felt maximizing those things was worth the sacrifice. Whatever the case was the consequences were that lack of the self sealing tanks and armor that all American aircraft were equipped with made them extremely vulnerable to incendiary rounds. Even just one of two hits, if it hits any fuel tank, were most often enough to turn a Japanese zero or betty into a flying torch incenterating the pilot of crew before they could escape. A Rifle Cartridge such as a .308 of .30 Calibur would be as effective in those cases as a .50 Calibur Machine Gun Round of both were of the incendiary type of ammunition. In Germany it was a different story alltogather. The German fighters such as the Me109 and Fw190 were all equipped with both self sealing fuel tanks and were armored. This made the much more difficult I shoot down, especially for the early British infantry rifle.303 Calibur ammunition the Spitfires and Hurricanes then used, before getting 20mm cannon. Even people like Aruthur Harris refered to them as endemic and woefully underarmed, even with eight fast firing machine guns. The faster rate helped, and of course many German fighters were shot down, luckily one good thing was the liquid cooling systems of the 109s online engines that were vulnerable to the small rifle cartridge and one big would down he German fighter. So with that the high rate of fire really helped as it increased the chances of that one lucky hit. In any case the battle of Britain was a very c!odd won battle and the fact is that it was again Hitler being a Moron and ordering concentration on terror bombings of the cities, and Goreing meekly.agreeing instead of telling Hitler victory was close it they stuck to their current tactics and this ordering the blitz instead of targeting the RAF and it's fields that have England it's victory. The RAF was literally less than eight combat hours from being broken, broken where the Germans would have absolutely detested and then poured it on. But they switched to bombing cities and civilians because the British had the audacity to bomb German cities when English cities had been bombed by the germans. Germans hate that more than anything, being treated like they treat others, they can't fathom how that is justification. In any case it gave the RAF THE break and rest it's crews pilots mechanics and fields so desperately needed to rebuild and survive. If the Spitfires and Hurricanes had been armed with the .50 Calibur Machine Guns as most American fighters were of 20mm cannons as they were later there is no doubts they would have shot down far more German fighters and bombers. Possibly even the rate they calculated they needed to win the battle, who h they really never came close to. I think it four to one and they actually achieved around one and one half to one. Those being the numbers fighter versus fighter it was higher fighter versus bomber of course. Also England .managed to get back somewhere between one third to one half of its pilots who were shot down that would then return to the fight in another fighter someday, sometimes the very next day. The Germans by comparison lost almost all of the pilots and crews shot down over England or the English Channel to either capture of drowning.

There were no Zeros in China at this time. The Tigers flew against older obsolete Japanese planes. The P-40s outclassed them.

What the 14th did Would Not have happened Without All the Chinese People That Built the Entire Infrastructure as a Measure to Protect Their Land and Heritage! In my lifetime (58). I had the Honor of meeting around a dozen men from the 14th. Two were transport pilots, one a fighter pilot and, the others ground/ admin/ they did everything!

lewis jones The reason we're able to put films on KZbin is that we sell stock footage from them for documentary filmmakers, media producers, and broadcasters. The timecode counters are used to identify the material they need, and provide an easy way to identify individual films. We're sorry you don't like the counter but if you leave the banner ads up, you won't even see it.

The countdown timer is historically accurate for military films! It would give the projector operator and the instructor the timing to prepare for showing the next film or if needed a break At certain times to discuss a Topic! It's History!
