I suppose flying is a lucrative market and it's for >upper-middle people in China. High speed rail is a lot cheaper though for longer distance like Harbin to Shanghai, train does take a while. It takes 12 hours, for second class (economy) it cost US$146 (CNY1,003.5). Then again I only paid a little bit more to go all the way to Singapore!
@_w_w_ Жыл бұрын
Flying in China is reserved for the wealthy and business travelers on a super tight schedule. Most of the times, you can travel on high-speed rail faster and cheaper... and a bit more comfortable.
@LiquidTomatoo Жыл бұрын
@@_w_w_That's not the case actually, in China we do have LCCs like Spring Airlines if you want cheap prices and Jetstar-like service (sometimes they offers 99 RMB wo/ tax for a one-way flight). If you are looking for a cheap price with decent service like Virgin Australia, choose privately-owned airline like Juneyao Air. And nowadays those flagship high speed rail (高铁 Gao Tie) are basically the same price compares to major airlines (MU, CA, CZ, etc.), those non-flagship high speed rail runs at a lower speed (动车 Dong Che) offers a lower price but will significantly increase your travel time as there will be more stops throughout the journey.
@_w_w_ Жыл бұрын
@@LiquidTomatoo I am aware.. I fly in China frequently. And LCC in China is no different than elsewhere in the world, and they have lousy schedules and endless of add-on fees. Sans occasional fare sale, it's actually more affordable to take Harmony HSR in most cases. The booking system I use also prices Spring (春秋)'s fare and also the likes of 吉祥. When you start to calculate luggage, carry-on, seat selection and so on, their price is only marginally below the Big4, yet you have to contend with much worse schedules. If you use that scale, US is even cheaper... Our LCC is constantly doing $9, $19, $29USD fare sales. The only reason I fly MU is because Delta owns a part of China Eastern and really pushes hard on us to use MU when in China and its schedule better aligns with my business travel needs. In general, airfare in China is quite high when you compare it to income. In the US, we can have 4-6 hr cross-country flights for $200-300 USD roundtrip. And on many occasions, we can go from the US to Europe for $350-$500 USD roundtrip,... that's upto 10 hours of flying per direction.
@kikili6346 Жыл бұрын
It may also because of when you don’t look out for discounts. Most of the time when they have discounts you can fly for under $200usd on domestic flights in China, if there are lots of airlines and timeslots available. But high speed rail is usually a more affordable option and saves more time.

Hi Jayden. A good size meal on that flight. The seats looked comfy , too. Did you find any pry shooting video for your vlogs ? I know some other KZbinrs who have run into a problem or 2 when trying to film in China. I thought it was interesting that they had trouble with your Hong Kong passport, considering that ( if i am correct), they are back under the rule of the Chinese Government .🤔
@JaydenWong Жыл бұрын
no I felt quite vlogging-safe in Harbin. Quite a lot of domestic tourists were vlogging too. I suppose you will get into trouble if you shoot videos anywhere near government buildings, particularly in Beijing, that's where the BBC always get into trouble LOL. Perhaps in Urumqi too near any who-knows-what camp. There are two types of Hong Kong passport (probably the only place on earth with two passports!): British Overseas and Chinese. I hold the Chinese one, and the reason why they might not have seen it is because when we Hong Kongers enter the mainland, we use a special ID card to get in, no passport needed, I suppose they do that purposely to make the immigration process less international to emphasise that HK is part of China. I was going to Singapore that day (connecting in Shanghai) so therefore I used my passport. When I enter mainland China, I use the Chinese citizen lane. On the other hand, in HK, I use the HK lane, mainland Chinese people will have to use the visitor/foreign lane LOL. Moreover, Aussies like you can enter HK visa-free. Mainland Chinese need a so-called "two-way permit", which really is a visa. That alone speaks a lot about how China wants HK to be fully-integrated but in HK, the government officials say so too but the immigration process speaks otherwise.

I've flown enough MU flights to know the food is really bad, so please don't use it to shame US or European airlines. China's airfare is insanely high (even more so when compared to income) so they can squeeze out 5RMB to 10RMB to provide a basic meal. For that type of price, for 1 leg, I can do at least 1 roundtrip with an US airline that is 3 times longer in flight duration and distance. I can go from SF to NY for $250 USD roundtrip. This is why US airlines do not have enough profit left to serve a hot meal.
@JaydenWong Жыл бұрын
Hi there! I appreciate your comment. I do want to clarify a few points. I am sure the meal I received is better than a pack of pretzels on BA, a bottle of water on Lufthansa or Biscoff on AA. And really, so far all the food I got on China Eastern have been alright, a bit bland from Shanghai to Melbourne in June 2023 but what I got on their domestic flights and Shanghai to Singapore earlier this month was fantastic. Chinese Domestic flights are indeed expensive but international flights (with domestic connection) are insanely cheap. I paid $200 to fly from Sydney to Harbin via Guangzhou (9 hours plus 4 hours flying time) and $150 from Harbin to Singapore via Shanghai (3 hours plus 5 hours) Speaking of profit, US carriers certainly can afford to feed us lobsters and steak in economy. US carriers are very profitable. Delta and Southwest are the two most profitable airlines in the world. For legacy carriers like AA, UA & DL as well as Qantas in Australia, credit cards/loyalty do play a big part in their profit.
@_w_w_ Жыл бұрын
@@JaydenWong Funny, I just came off Delta flights with some very fancy and expensive snacks. MU give a tiny bag of peanuts whereas Delta gives sizable bags of almonds and pistachios. Delta's chocolate, shortcakes, granola bars, fruit bars, chips... just about everything is 10x more premium than MU's. These items are more than enough as a healthy light meal and Delta spend a lot of money on them. A few weeks ago, I came off MU flights that served soggy tasteless noodles. Tea was terrible and the powdered coffee was even worse. I saw plenty of passengers who refused those food items. You also forget to mention that MU only serve meal during meal hours, so for many flights, you do not get a meal! By the way, you are Delta Gold. I am Diamond Medallion and Million Miller, so I think I know a bit more about their business models and practices. US airlines operate on very thin margins. Delta makes most of its profit not from flying, but from American Express. Southwest made their money from hedging. Without those non-core business secondary income, they would not be as profitable. Prior to the pandemic, Delta served meals in economy on its transcon routes, it was better than anything I have even eaten on MU, FM, CZ or CA flights.

Funny allthose delta fans are full of BS. Just got off from a delta short haul flight I am so glad my company paid for the ticket. Very underwhelming service and overpriced. $400 for a 40min flight. Don’t even offer a bottle of water. The 717 cabin is filthy and disgusting. Fancy snack are you kidding me? Only deltas ass kisser will consider biscoff and nutsdotcom almonds are fancy. Maybe you should go to a nearby 7-11 and enjoy your fanciness with all those homeless outside. Chinese Big fours offer way better product than US airlines. At least domestic first class got lounge access. All cabin came with free check in bag allowance. And the best thing no “fancy” MQDs. The new Deltas medallion rules shows all they care about are the Money. Your loyalty meant nothing to them. They serving you gas station snacks for a Five hours transcon flight. And yet someone call it “fancy” I am literally reading this comments and laughing my fking ass off. Go enjoy the line outside the skyclub and dump more money to them.

Air fares in Europe or the US are not always cheap. I would say they are expensive most of the same. Discounted tickets are just a a few on each flight. So no reason to justify the service drop. The only good thing about airlines in Europe and the US, is that they are safer. That’s all. Nothing to feel proud of
@_w_w_11 ай бұрын
@@FranciscoCamino By distance, Chinese airlines' fares are high. By consumer income, Chinese airlines' fares are high. The big 3 Chinese airlines, factor in how long they operated, are relatively safe! Korean Air, well regarded in the west, has very concerning safety record.

Hi Jayden out of curiosity how did you gain delta gold whilst being based in Aus?
@JaydenWong Жыл бұрын
I did status match in January. They offered me to keep it for the rest of 2023 after I earn (I think) 15000 miles/MQM. Normally you need 50000MQM. I have since earned 50000MQM for 2024! You earn lots flying China Eastern and Korean Air (flying this next month) That being said, Delta is changing the qualification for reaching new tiers in 2024 and I won’t be able to keep it after 2025

Wow that's an expensive airfare. That's pretty much what I see when researching fares in China. The rest of us should count ourselves a bit lucky.
