China's decade long crackdown on millions of ethnic Uyghurs in the country's west has entered a new phase.
Now, the police checkpoints have been rolled back and millions of Chinese tourists are flooding the area, thanks to government subsidised travel.
Uyghur groups abroad have called it "genocide tourism", claiming it's an attempt to commodify the culture of a people who are still living in constant fear.
David Lipson travelled to Kashgar in southern Xinjiang as part of a media tour organised by the Chinese government, and filed this report.
