Small correction on Chinas hypersonic weapons: Hypersonic Glide Vehicles (HGVs) don’t orbit the earth at all and rarely enter space, they are made to go up on a traditional booster and glide down from a low altitude. What you were describing was a Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS) which is made to sit in orbit for an indefinite period and then deorbit above a target, and FOBS are rarely classified as hypersonic weapons because while they do come in above mach 5, they usually don’t have maneuvering capabilities due to the angle of reentry. It sounds like semantics, but if mach 5 was the only requirement the first ballistic missiles from the 40s would count as hypersonic weapons.
@ralterdrake556Сағат бұрын
Congrats, you figured it out. We HAVE had hypersonic weapons since the 40's. This current hype is literally just propaganda, just like calling auto-complete on steroids "AI" for propaganda reasons.
@fians479355 минут бұрын
@ I wouldn’t call it hype. True hypersonic weapons (HWs) do pose real challenges for current missile defense systems since they are geared for ballistic missiles. The way missile defense currently works is you see the missile go up and from there it’s easy to figure out not only where it’s gonna land, but where it’s gonna be at all times in its flight path because it’s a predictable ballistic arc and from there you put an interceptor in its way. Think of it like trying to stop a speeding car by looking at where it’s going and dropping a concrete block it’s path to stop it. True HWs are challenging because; 1. Their ability to maneuver means you can’t predict their trajectory and in turn can’t place an interceptor in its path easily 2. It’s target is far less clear because that maneuverability means it can either fake it’s path or make a last minute change 3. Because they fly so low, they take advantage of the earth’s curvature and are able to avoid detection until potentially too late. The major take away you need here is that speed does not matter if you are predictable which true HWs are not, hence why Ballistic missiles are not considered HWs, because even though they technically achieve mach 5 they are extremely predictable. Now this does not mean doom and gloom, true HWs are extremely expensive, so they can’t be fired en mass or against any old target. These are highly specialized tools that are geared to exploit an opening in current missile defense systems. Should we all be afraid for our lives? No. Is there real strategic concern since we don’t have a counter for it yet? Absolutely. These arnt the same as the ballistic missiles we’ve had for decades, it’s gonna take time to find a working countermeasure and until then we will continue to worry about it the same way we worry about drones and autonomous weapons. Until the shield catches up to the sword, there needs to be emphasis on pushing the shield to get there.

@@amentco8445 Israel's Iron dome only worked against cheap unguided rockets powered by sugar lmao. We all saw the thing struggle against basic drones let alone traditional ballistic missiles fired by Iran. Now to Trump's idea: Do you know how many interceptors you would need to cover the whole earth at all times and how precise these interceptions would have to be? Achieving an interception rate of just 25% would bankrupt the US if it's even technically feasible. That idea is as ridiculous as the quest for world domination that America has been pursuing for decades, just admit that there are other countries that can hurt you as much as you can hurt them if not more, it's a lot cheaper and healthier in the long run.

NGL, the defense system the trump regime wants is extremely worrying for 2 reasons. 1)It opens the floodgates to space militarization, this will harm progress in other kinds of space based infrastructure, research, exploration and experimentation. 2) It signifies an EXTREMELY dangerous intention of global expansionism. When both sides have nuclear weapons the threat of retaliation stops war from breaking out due to mutual assured destruction. In this case a paradox occurs: developing a means to stop the nukes of others is the offensive move, not the defensive one. This is because it would allow you to use yours without worrrying for retaliation. This is extremely bad.
